Hello,

i had an AMD Athlon II P360 in my Acer Aspire 7551-3749. Recently, i changed my CPU for a new (and not so new) AMD Phenom II P650... and some problem appear.

The laptop works fine, but in the name of cpu says "AMD Unknown Model". Lately, i run software dedicated to simulate metaheuristics in real time and process data. These simulations are necessary part of my thesis of systems engineer degree.

With my old cpu i had no problems, but now, the laptop become unstable...

So, i know the problem is in the mainboard, i have the last bios (1.18), the northbridge is AMD RS880M / K10 IMC and southbridge SB870. In the past (a few years ago), i upgraded a desktop board with a similar problem, with another motherboard bios and the problems were solved.

I need, if anyone knows one bios that supports my laptop and recognize my new CPU, i will be grateful.

Best regards,
Gabriel.

PD: Sorry for my bad english, i'm still learning.

The Athlon CPU has a HyperTransport speed of 1.6 GHz, but the Phenom has a higher HT speed of 1.8 GHz. (HyperTransport is used to communicate with the rest of the components in the PC) This is the only thing I can think of that would cause the problems you're seeing. Nothing else would make sense, at least in my mind: power consumption is very similar, the socket type is exactly the same, both are built on 45nm technology, and both are supported by the chipset. The Phenom is actually older than that particular Athlon, so I would think it would work. If you're already running the latest BIOS, there's not much you can do. You can find a BIOS modding forum, but (speaking from personal experience), you can't expect anyone to actually help...

If it's really the case that your laptop can't handle CPU's with a 1.8 GHz HT speed, then your Athlon is the best CPU you can get. I would take this problem to Acer support and ask them for an official answer.
