Currently I have a Athlon X2 240 2.8GHZ @ 3.5GHZ. (really, really old..) It's been a decent processor but its age is really showing. My motherboard is a Asus M5A97 R2.0 ATX AM3+. CPU Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO. The memory is G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory. GPU is a Asus R7260X-DirectCU II OC-2GD5. PSU is a EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze . Case is a Corsair Graphite Series 230T Black. I obviously need a CPU upgrade, but i also want to upgrade my GPU. For the CPU I was gong to go with a FX 6300 OC'd of course, or a 8320 and OC it to 4.0. For the GPU I really want a the new Nvidia 900 series. My choices are 960, 960ti, (neither of these have been released yet.) Or the 970. The 980 is just to much money in my opinion. I need help picking the best configuration so the will be as little bottleneck as possible. Also if i'd have to ugrade my PSU as well. My current resolution is 1024x768 (i know its really bad...) After i upgrade my main components i'll buy a 1920 x 1080 Asus monitor. Any help would be much appreciated.

What CPU from the FX series and what GPU from the Nvidia 900 series ( not including the 980) would be best together at 1920x1080 with little to no bottleneck, and if my EVGA 500B PSU would be enough to power it all. Hopefully that is clearer.

Be sure you have the latest BIOS update before going to vishera chips, if you do not have the latest BIOS then you cannot utilize the fx 6300 or 8350. If you are going for nividia you are going to have to uninstall ALL your Radeon Drivers. 8350 won't bottleneck the 900 series, but again the switch from radeon to Nvidia is a hard one.

The new 900 cards draw less power than their 770/780 predecessors so yes with a little room left over so I would consider upgrading the PSU sometime soon.

Ah thank you! I'll make sure to update my BIOS. Will the 8350 and GTX 970 play upcoming games like Far Cry 4 , Call of Duty Advanced Warfare, Battlefield 4 , Watchdogs, Assassins Creed Unity with mostly high to ultra settings? Also would say a Corsair 750W 80+ gold be a good PSU? One last question will this set up last a good 3-5 years before I have to upgrade again?

Yes they will play upcoming titles as the gtx 970 is new and powerful, as long as that corsair is not a CX PSU then go ahead, but I would recommend the corsair AX PSU, EVGA, thermaltake, and antec PSU's :). The setup will last you quite a bit, but the FX line is already falling behind intel, even the Intel dual core's hold out on cards longer than FX, but the FX line is still good. I would recommend OC'ing later on to help with performance in the future.

Alright thank you so much. Guess when it's time to upgrade again i'll make the switch to intel. Have a good day or night.
