Windows 7 SSD and HDD backup

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if the Windows backup feature could back up a system SSD with a storage HDD? I have Windows 7 installed on a 128GB SSD and all of the data (documents, pictures, downloads, and a few programs) on a 2TB HDD. If I use Windows backup, will it remember and back up the file mappings on the HDD as well? I'm looking to upgrade to Windows 8.1 soon as a fresh install and wanted to back up first. It's a little more complicated as the copy of 7 I'm running isn't legit and I am planning to buy an actual license.

Thanks!

Hey there, JustAnotherGuitarist!

You can use Windows backup to create a system image on the HDD. You can even set a time schedule for it - weekly or daily if you want to. There a lot of third-party software tools out there that can do the same.
Or as @geofelt suggested you can use Windows Easy Transfer for your files, but this is not really a back up.
Indeed, the re-installation of software applications is unavoidable though, because of the clean registry.

Hope I helped.

You can use windows easy transfer to export all your files and settings from the ssd to the hard drive.
When you finally do a clean install, you can import them back.
Because you now have a clean registry, any programs that used the registry(that will be virtually all) must be reinstalled.
