I am in the market for a cheap desktop, but obviously I want the best I can get on a budget. I will be running programs like NI Multi-sim, Adobe Suite 6, and MS Office. Eventually, my son will want to play games, though I do not. I found a Dell Inspiron within my 250.00 limit.

Processor 2.8 GHz Intel Celeron
RAM 4 GB DDR3
Hard Drive 500 GB
Number of USB 2.0 Ports 4
Number of USB 3.0 Ports 2
Item model number i3647-1233BLK
Operating System Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Hard Drive Rotational Speed 7200 RPM.

My friend at school said I should buy this computer:

Crosair HX750W 750 Watt modular power supply - single + 12V rail design
ASUS P5N-D Motherboard - NVIDA nFORCE 750i SLI,Socket 775, ATX, Audio, PCI Express 2.0, Gigabit LAN, S/PDIF, USB 2.0, Firewire, Serial ATA, RAID

Intel core 2 Quad Q9400 Processor BX80580Q9400 - 2.66 Ghz, 6MB Cache, 1333Mhz FSB, Yorkfield, Quad-core, Retail socket 775,Processor w fan.

3GBCrucial 1024MB PC6400 DDR2 800 Mhz memory

EVGA 01G-P3-N959-TR GeForce 9500 GT Video card - 1GB DDR2, PCI express 2.0, SLI support, (Dual link) dual DVI, HDTV VGA support

Predator PX-880SA DVD/CD Super Multi Writer - DVD+RW 8X, DVD-RW 6X, DVD-RAM 12X, CD-R48X, CD-RW 32X, SATA, Lightscribe

I have only primitive computer knowledge, and would really appreciate some advice on what this all means, and if its a wise choice. This doesn't come w monitor. I can't afford to make a mistake, I'm a single father and a full-time student.

Thank you

If you're getting at the same price, definitely the second one. 1GB less ram, but a much faster processor and it comes with a graphics card.

Neither of them will be able to play demanding games, but the second one is better.

You can find a similar spec core 2 quad pc on ebay for $100. You didn't mention how much it costed but I wouldn't suggest it. I can find sb i5 ~$200 which is significantly better than either of those.

Out of the two - the second with Intel core 2 Quad Q9400 + a new

but you d better build your own new for that money

I'd say his best bet is looking for a used pc as k114 suggested. Building a new pc with OS included would easily push him over his $250 budget to get the same performance as the used pc he listed.

He needs windows, that puts him $100 over budget. Plus I'd take a sb i5 over that build any day.

I'd say your better off trying to find a used one or buying the inspiron you mentioned, that would do well for your needs for at least a couple years but if you try to build a gaming pc on that budget right now it will be outdated in the next year maybe two.
If you were looking on Dell's website than it includes all but the monitor and will last you until you can afford a better computer.
