Router to ignore campus firewall

Let me start off saying I use an Ethernet cable plugged into the dorm wall.

My campus is blocking ports, preventing me from playing Battlefield 4. The specific port is 3659, but according to a IT guy I have befriended he told me that of course the ports are being blocked, and unless it is forwarded to me directly it will not work. Chances are that is not going to happen. He therefore suggested without 100% confidence that if I were to buy my own router, that it may be able to bypass the firewall and all ports would be available. I called my IT friend I met online and he told me that it will not work because the router still has to go through the campus Internet since I am in a dorm.

Therefore, will buying my own router allow me to play and ports be unblocked, or would the router still have to go through campus firewall and thus make no change?

-Thank you

Two things. First, your first friend is an idiot and your second friend is right. Second, bypassing the firewall would likely be a good way to get you kicked out of your dorms, since you likely signed some sort of AUP regarding their internet. It sucks, but that's dorm life.

And what's the router plugged into to get out to the outside world? Your jack in the wall, which goes through the campus network and firewall.

Not if it's wireless

Look, I'm going to make this as simple as possible, since you seem to be grasping at any straw to get around your predicament:

The only way you're going to be able to use the port you want is to go through your own internet paid for with your own money. There are absolutely zero ways you can use the campus network and bypass their controls that won't result in you being kicked off of campus and/or spending some time in jail.
