Hello!

My current setup is getting quite old and ready for an upgrade. However, money is an issue! I would love to get a good setup, and therefore thinking about buying the components in two rounds.

First a graphics card, SD and some ram, then later a new motherboard and a CPU. However, for now my CPU is a i7 920, which makes me wonder what would happen if I were to place a GTX 970 together with my i7 920, would I then be bottlenecking my graphics card ? or would it be worth the money to buy such a card?

As said I am looking for a motherboard + CPU upgrade at some point in the future, just not at the same time.

Not much, but probably a little at stock speed.

Overclocking a bit would alleviate the bottleneck completely though. The I7 920 is still a competent CPU if you just raise its low clock speed a little.

Even if you do not overclock, your plan is solid. GO FOR IT!
