170mb/s drive cant record @ 1080p 60fps?

So I have 2 hard-drives, a 1tb caviar blue which i play games on and a black on which i record. When playing it gets about 140mb/s but struggles to record at 60fps. I have no idea why it isnt powerful enough after countless people telling me it'd be perfect for the job. I use dxtory lossless lagarith.

AMD r9 290
I5 4670k
1TB Caviar blue
1TB Caviar Black
Z87-HD3 Mobo
2x4gb ram Ares Gskill 2100mhz
Rm 750w psu

I have battlefield 4 on my C drive and my 1tb black is my F drive. I have downloaded a codec, lossless lagarith and am recording using dxtory which has been downloaded onto my c drive and then i have moved it over to my f drive.
It cant be a hardware issue as it has a normal write speed of 170+mb/s and drops to 140mb/s when playing a game, can it?

Hey there, Whatisgoingonherethen!

Sorry to hear you are struggling with this. What is the model of your 1TB WD Black?
Usually drives don’t all start out at the same speed, so the point is about the way speed drops as the drives fill up.
As a drive fills up, all your new stuff, the stuff you’re working on, is stored onto the slowest part of the drive, because the faster parts of the drive have already been filled up.
You say it is a 1TB drive, so I'm not sure that this speed rate is accurate. Generally, this depends on the system configuration, usage of the HDD and its capacity as well.
A good case practice is dividing the WD Black in 2 partitions. One for game play and the other one for recording (the latter should be only as big as your longest recording).
I don't know if it's really going to improve the performance of the drive, but you can still try.

Hope this helps. Keep me posted!

the hdd is 2 weeks old and is literally empty :/ Its new and the write speed is accurate, i've tested it myself!

Hi again!
:( This must be rather disappointing for you!

Well, then I can suggest you to contact our tech support for further assistance in resolving your issue!
I'm sure they will be able to walk you through and answer why this is happening:

should it be able to record @ 60fps easily?

hmmm, just downloaded fraps and it can record a smooth 60fps easily. I have no idea why dxtory cant though, i think its a software issue!

It really must be! I can also suggest to switch the settings on the Dxtory and set them on medium to see how it will perform.
Maybe, it won't be much of difference between the high settings and the medium settings. I can also suggest to check out this link with options on getting the 60fps to work on Dxtory as well:

Hope I was able to help.

How do i put on "medium" settings, there's no option like that for me, just video quality, resolution etc.
Quick update on fraps, was working perfectly on the trial version, 30 second clips, 60fps easily, got the full version and it stutters to 40 constantly! What is going on!? The trial was always 60fps, now it can barely keep up w/ 60. fml man -.-

Sorry to hear that! :(
Well, I suggest you check out some other stuff that may have effect on this:
- Insufficient cooling ( MUST have good rear case fan and front intake over HDD's helps too if possible point a fan at system chipset too)
- Incorrectly Configured Hardware or Software ( Most likely anti virus, media servers, some hardware monitoring tools or misbehaving USB device )
- Fragmented HDD's ( Dedicate a HDD and format, Disk defragment is software not always effective )
- Extremely long recordings ( over 1 hour continuously vary depends on amount of RAM and HDD burst write speeds and recording content )

BTW, Have you tried with the standard Dxtory Codec, as a lot of users complain that the Lagarith one drops the fps when recording?

Cooling wise I have 5 fans, 4 intake 1 outtake fan. A 200mm fan is right next to the hdd. So it cant be cooling.
I am recording for 2-5 minutes so that cant be it.
Fragmented? I dont know what that means or how I would fix that, would formatting the HDD help?
I have tried the standard dxtory settings and that hasnt been great if I remember correctly.
I am currently recording with fraps @ 50fps 1080p and it keeps up all the time, but I am just annoyed because my fps takes a big hit from it and I can tell its not as smooth.
Would an ssd to write the recordings on allow me to use dxtory with less lag and frame impact?
Is there anyway I can fix this? Fraps is okay, but I normally play @ 90fps on ultra and when I record I feel it stutter more, and be less smooth. Does fraps automatically cap your fps at the given recording value?
If I set it to record at 120 would that help less lag, the framaerate would be less stable but would that be a big deal if i rendered it out to be 30fps footage?

I'm truly sorry about all this bad experience. :(
I'd really advice you to contact tech support as they will be more capable to hear you out and give you more concrete answers: http://support.wdc.com/contact/contact.asp?lang=en

As for the SSD, if FRAPS is installed on it, then FRAPS will load quicker. That's about it, there's no way I can say for sure if it's going to lag less. I wouldn't consider it for the recording itself.
A way to fix this is by checking your whole system configuration for competability, specs, etc. and test everything making sure that the problem is not on some other component.
Have you considered setting up a RAID 0 configuration for the recordings though?

how do i set up a raid 0? What will that do?
I havent touched the bios, even since i set up the computer, i just installed drivers and thats it. Havent been into the bios once. Surely a ssd would allow me to record at better fps though, as it has a higher write speed?

Hi again!

I really don't know why you are so sure about all the other components in your system, without even testing them. I encourage you to do it, so you don't end up setting up an entirely new storage configuration and still getting the same unsatisfactory results.
However, to set up a RAID 0 configuration, you need a minimum of 2 identical HDDs (preferably RAID/NAS drives like WD Reds) This kind of RAID configuration provides no data redundancy or fault tolerance, but improves performance through parallelism of read/write operations across multiple drives. RAID 0 has no error detection mechanism, so the failure of one HDD causes the loss of all data on the array. Users set up this kind of RAID when they prefer speed and performance, rather than a reliable storage.
I found a thread in the community about storage solutions for Fraps & Dxtory that might help you figure out your solution:

Hope I helped.
