Ive had my pc for about 3 years and in the last few months, everytime i play any game at a high graphics setting, the whole pc reboots itself. It just cuts off, no warning screens nothing. I used to be able to run Left 4 dead 2 on max settings but now after a few years it has the reboot problem, i can run it fine if i turn down the graphics to medium or low just not high. It does it with every modern game if the settings arn't low(everything disabled) E.G. need for speed rivals. i thought this was a heating issue at first because i tried gta iv and it rebooted. i dusted the pc with a can of compressed air and could run gta iv fine (this was a few months ago) last week i cleaned the CPU heatsink and the gpu Heatsink. There was alot of dust the on the GPU, so i thought that it would be fixed. i installed a few games and the error is still persistent. Ive read that it could be PSU, overheating. ive ran temp programs in games and it does reach up 90 degrees in most games (both the gpu and cpu) but it never had this problem i use to ran many games just perfect, its come on all of a sudden and i would like some help as to what could be fixed or if i should just get a whole new PC

SPECS:
Intel Core i7-870 2.93ghz 8mb cache
16GB ddr3 1333MHz memory
@tb sata 3GB/S hard disk drive

Sounds like a faulty power supply, what is it?

Hardware cutting out tends to leave warnings but if a power supply cuts out, the screen either goes black (sometimes restarts) or a blue screen (sometimes with writing (errors))

I would also try one stick of ram and vice versa, as a faulty ram stick can be the reasoning of rebooting after crashing. If no go clear CMOS then re-install ram again.

just took the case off the PSU brand, is ACBEL. i currently took out the 3 sticks of ram and left one in. Just before i was playing skyrim, no choppy frames, it was fine, then it rebooted. but this time now when there it reboots there is a tick noise every 1.5 seconds and it stops at the windows loading bar. this just started happening now

I do not trust that unknown brand of power supply at all. No matter what I would upgrade that.

the ticking noise may be the PSU fan hitting something before coming to a complete stop, then it shuts down before overheating.

Mate the PSU is fine, all these years its never let me down. i did what you said and took out all ram and left 1 stick in. Normally when i launch nfs rivals on medium settings on a high resolution before the game even loads it will reboot. I can have it max resolution and all settings ULTRA and i have never been so happy to just have poor FPS. it didnt reboot for like 5 mins(when it would reboot just before the first gameplay screen) on everything ultra even though i get like 5 fps( just graphics card cant handle it) man, i can not thank you enough, you have saved me ALOT of money. like you dont understand how grateful i am right now that youve helped me, i stopped playing skyrim since 2012 because of this error, i cant believe it has been that long all because of a RAM stick. thank you so so so soooooo much

So it was a ram stick all along? So all works well with one ram stick?

Glad to know i have helped.

mate im stumped, the reboot is back. i was playing NFS all morning fine, played l4d2 on max settings, a few minutes in it reboots itself again. Im using only one ram stick at a time and going through them when the pc reboots. im not sure if it is the ram sticks or it could be one of the ram ports. All i know is it was fine last night and this morning.

I would urge you go to a repair shop and get your motherboard tested, as far as testing goes this is beyond our control.

cmos battery, replace it dude.

oh wait you said you removed the gpu and cpu heatsinks?

did you apply thermal paste when you put them back?

could be gpu or cpu overheating - its a standard for cpu or gpu to restart the system if it comes close to overheating
