I am trying to connect my USB external HDD to my ASUS AC66U router via usb, and make it show up in my network locations on my pc so i can use it as a normal drive without having to unplug it and plug into my pc to copy things onto the hard drive.

i got it to show up in network at first but was having some trouble mapping it, so i cleaned it formatted it started fresh, now it would show up under network on "computer"

it is recognized under the router homepage and when i scan through the router is comes back with "errors on hard drive, not working properly, plug into computer to fix if needed" or something along those lines.

im pretty certain this is possible i just don't get whats going on to be honest now. ive formatted to to different types (ntfs, exfat,fat32) to see if it will pick up but still to no avail.

a little help in the right direction would be appreciated.

thanks

Hi there TLG1991,

You can try testing it with a brand specific testing tool. The hard drive may have some bad sectors that could be the reason for these messages to appear. Also you can run chkdsk (drive letter): /F in the Command Prompt and see if this will sort the issue out.

It will also not hurt if you try another USB cable.

Hope this will help,

thanks for the reply D_Know_WD,

i wouldn't be surprised if my other half had knocked the HDD over or something and its done working properly. (ive dropped a few myself so i can't talk)

but ill run some of the checks you mentioned and try a few extra things and come back with an update. thanks

So i fixed the HDD up no problems came back on it, its is so called healthy.

i plugged it back in to router and this time is came up in the network tab at the side in "computer".
i was still unable to map network drive so i copied and pasted the folder into the "computer" then it came up under network locations as it would if i had mapped it.

So that's all done. problem i have now is the HDD isn't being picked up by my TV or AIcloud app, it picked them up before over the network and was able to watch films through it and whatever else no problem. i don't think i changed or disabled anything on the router but i will have to double check over things.

wish i knew how exactly it fixed itself up but it just kind of started working.
