I upgraded my old hard disk running Win 8.1 to a new SSD and I used Acronis to Clone the Old hard disk.
I would like to re use my old hard disk as a back up system only. How can I format my old Hard disk please. Old hard disk is recognised by BIOS but in Win 8.1 it does not show up in Control Panel devices or Disk Management.

You may need to reinitialize the old HD(odd that you would have to). In control panel go to: admin tools, computer mgt, disk mgt, if the drive appears, right click on the drive and it should allow you to reinitialize the disk.

I went in to those settings and the old hard disk is not showing up in this area.
only the new SSD is on there as C:\ drive.

Hi there Donny88,

You man need to format it through the Command Prompt. Just be careful not to choose your SSD when listing the volumes. Here's the link: https://www.techhack.co.uk/2011/03/31/format-a-hard-dri...

Hope this will help,

I tested the above the HD is not appearing on the list, so I went in to Disk area in hardware/devices settings and I am now getting an error on IDE ATA / ATAPI controllers and what is worse is I have also lost the use of my DVD rom reader I checked driver updates and Windows is reporting I have the latest update. Do you think i need to resolve the IDE controller issue before going further?

I think you should try reinstalling/updating your Motherboard drivers.

Hope this will help,
