Problem with new i7 3770k CPU, freezing and not booting

I recently purchased an i7 3770k to replace my i5 2500k. I'm using an Asus P8P67 Pro motherboard so I updated the bios to the latest version so the i7 would be compatible.

Then I put the i7 in the motherboard and turned it on, I got into windows and ran a benchmark and everything seemed fine.

The problems started when I restarted the computer and tried getting into the bios, it just kept freezing in the bios and anytime I tried to get to windows.

It either just froze as soon as it was turned on and the boot led on the motherboard lit up or sometimes when I turned it on the gpu led lit up and there's no picture on my screen.

I then put my i5 back in to see if there was a problem with any of the other components but it works 100%

I've put the i7 back in it now and I don't get any picture on my screen and the gpu light on the motherboard lights up.

I've tried using only one ram stick in different slots and setting it up on a breadboard but nothing works. I'm at a loss as to how it worked the very first time and now isn't working at all now.

System specs:
Corsair 750w psu
8GB corsair ram
Asus p8p67 pro
Gigabyte 7970

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Most websites will specify specific MB revisions (in addition to BIOS versions) as supporting particular CPU models.....; yours might have worked a short while, but have been insufficient with respect to the cbipset's revision number. (Asus' website should specify revision numbers as supporting assorted new cpus, where applicable)

(the below link seems to imply there should be no issues, however)

Yeah I had checked that, my motherboard is revision 3.0, it says they're compatible after bios version 3207 and I've mine updated to 3602.

Any troubleshooting ideas or do you think it's a faulty CPU?

i think mdd1963 is right regarding your chipset.
its best to use a z77 or higher mainboard, also if you plan to overclock make sure it has a 8 pin cpupowerconnector onthe board. my 3770k is running on a maximus v extreme its also a z77 board with 8+4 power connectors on the board.
