I'm looking to upgrade my gpu to the new GTX 980 to support 3 or 4 monitors. I was wondering if it would be better to sell my current GTX 680 or even buy another GTX 680 to sli or maybe just keep the 680 and the 980 together. Would having two different cards be effective?

Can someone please tell me the best way to approach this situation

Solution
With Nvidia you can't SLI two different cards. (you sort of can with AMD but they have to be in the same series and class) Also the 680 supports up to 6 monitors natively.

I don't know where you could find a 680 for sale with a decent price without being used so I would sell it and buy a 980.
I don't know what you have trouble running with a 680 if you're on 1080p because it's still a great card in my opinion. (hence the 770 being a tweaked 680)

although you cant sli a 980 and 680 together you can still have them both in your system running the primary gaming monitor off the 980 and 2-3 monitors on the 680. This will give you the best performance for gaming on a single monitor while being able to offload the physx and 2-3 monitors to the 680.

Also a gtx 680 can only support up to 4 monitors.

Hello faalin!

I have just purchased a bigger case, so i can fit my new gtx 980 which i am trying to sli together with gtx 680. Can you please give me some tips on how many sli bridges and power i need, i have 750W PSU.

You cant sli a 680 with a 980. You can use the 980 as your primary card and have the 680 as a secondary card set to be use as PhysX, doing this uses no sli bridges. I really don't see any benefit out of doing this though, you will only be adding more heat to your case.

When I upgraded my computer I tried using my old 580 for PhysX but could see no difference with it in or out of the computer. Just run the 980 by itself as it can handle anything you throw at it.
