Hi, I have read a lot of threads on issues with the i7 4790ks temperature but i can't seem to find one that would apply to my conditions so I decided to make a thread of my own.

So I have built my first gaming PC:

CPU: intel i7 4790k
Cooler: Stock
RAM: 8Gb Vengeance DDR3 1866Mhz
MOBO: GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-GAMING 3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150)
PSU: COOLERMASTER 750 Watt Modular Bronze 80Plus PSU
CASE: NZXT 410 phantom white
HDD: 2Tb Seagate SATA 3 6Gb/Ps Hard drive 7200RPM
SSD: SAMSUNG 250Gb EVO 2.5” SATA III SSD

I will be adding an MSI GTX 970 later this week when it arrives.

So I have problems with the temperatures of my CPU, at first boot the BIOS would show temperatures of the cores ranging around 65C mark... I went along and installed windows 7... installed motherboard and CPU drivers and then went onto running the AIDA64 system stability test. Thats when the temperature shot up to 80/90C and further onto even 100C.

I stopped the test immediatelly.

With some research I have then done these things...

Checked that cooler is installed properly by reapplying it

set the default vcore voltage to 1.750 (at 1.500 the system would boot into windows and then shut down) with both settings I have set the Vrin voltage +0.6 higher than the vcore

I have also turned of the K OC option within the BIOS...

this turned my idle temperatures to around 35C (measured with Core Temp. CPUID HWmonitor and Real Temp)

I have now been running AIDA64 System Stability Test for around 25 minutes and the readings are According to
Core Temp:
core 0: Max 92C
core 1: Max 93C
core 2: Max 91C
core 3: Max 88C

HWMonitor:
core 0: Max 91C
core 1: Max 92C
core 2: Max 91C
core 3: Max 88C

RealTemp:
core 0: Max 92C
core 1: Max 93C
core 2: Max 91C
core 3: Max 88C

AIDA64:
core 0: Max 92C
core 1: Max 91C
core 2: Max 91C
core 3: Max 88C

So the question is what should I do?
Im pretty new to all the settings with the CPU voltage and other stuff.

I don't plan on overclocking now, maybe in two years time when I get a better cooler.

Should I change any more BIOS settings or are these the best temperatures I will get with a stock cooler? The things is I can buy a new cooler but i dont know if it will help considering I'm getting such high temperatures and such low voltage and the number of people having similar problems with the i7 4790K is not encouraging.

I will be greatful for any help guys.

Sorry if i missed anything out in the post by the way.

Solution

What was the error? Most likely you need to raise your voltage up a bit.. try 1.2 volts, i think that is a common voltage for stock settings.

Thanks for such quick respond guys... Right that is what i thought but the guys in my local computer shop said the stock cooler would be fine and that is the second time they said so as I went in today after uni to buy the h100i, which I didn't buy as they made me think that I installed the cooler incorrectly.

Im using the paste that came with the cooler for now but i have a cooler master paste that I can apply to it if you think its a good idea.

But how do i get it to run on 1.2 when it doesnt boot fully? Maybe i need to change more settings? What would be great is to know the exact bios settings that I should set up because at first my mobo was feeding the cpu with 1.4v on auto settings which i thought was way too much.

Back to changing the paste, what should I use to clean the old paste? Would a dry cloth with some perfume be acceptable or am I talking non sense?

I think the max safe voltage for these CPUs is around 1.4v... Running yours at 1.75v could have damaged it ( that is extreamly high voltage).
read this, notice the voltage they used for high overclocks.

If you are unable to boot at stock speeds at 1.5 volts your CPU is not working properly, if you can you might want to return it.

Right but wouldnt that be because their multiplier is higher? It says that their multiplier was at 48 where as my is on the stock 40

UPDATE: Oh god what am i saying haha, i set the vcore to 1.175 and the Vrin to 1.780... is that acceptable?

I have updated my last post please read it, i missed typed the information, oh god haha i feel stupid now

Lol ok 1.175 is a good voltage for stock clocks... Now that we got that cleared up lol yea you should re-set your CPU cooler, you may have added too much or too little thermal paste, a rice to pea size dot in the middle is really all you need. At stock clocks with stock cooler i'd expect to see max around 80c in those tests... if you buy a decent aftermarket cooler maybe something like the 212 Hyper evo that was suggested before your temps should be around 65-70c @ stock clocks.

Okay haha 1.75... lol, right so is a dry cloth and some perfume okay to clean it up or should i leave it for tomorrow and pop down my local computer shop to purchase a thermal paste cleaner or as such?

I mean right now I didnt apply the thermal paste my self i just used what came on the stock cooler.

Do you have any rubbing alcohol (the higher % the better but any should work)? That is what i use.

Okay, I'm thinking about purchasing the h100i, h80 or the h60 as I want to lover the temperature as much as possible.
Or do you think that the 212 Hyper is enough?

Also Im looking at my BIOS settings now.... they look like this:
CPU VRIN LoadLine Calibration: Auto
CPU Vrin External Override: 1.800V manually set to 1.780v
CPU Vcore: 1.173v manually set to 1.175v
CPU Vcore offset nill left on auto
CPU Graphics Voltage (VAXG): 1.000V left on auto
CPU RING Voltage: 1.050V auto

Are those all right?

Under the Advanced CPU core settings:

Intel Turbo Boost enabled
Turbo Ratio (core 1) 44
Turbo Ratio (core 2) 44
Turbo Ratio (core 3) 43
Turbo Ratio (core 4) 42
Turbo Power Limit (Watts) 88 but i enterd 83
Core Current Limit (Amps) 105 Auto

Are those also Ok?

I have done that today when I came home from Uni, all were set in place correctly and locked but I took the cooler out and put it back on taking my time to ensure that they are all locked in place, I even checked the back of the mobo as my case has a back plate cut out.

I think I may have so alcohol thing in my back garden that I use to wash of paint when I paint walls. Would that be fine?

Yea that should work.

Right I will do that either tomorrow or on Friday with a new cooler, hopefully we will see a drop in temperatures

As for the coolers, its always better to get a high end air cooler vs mid range water cooler... If you are worried the 212 hyper evo won't be enough - I'd suggest getting the NH-D14 or NH-D15 - they are quieter and will cool better than the H60 and H80 and about the same as the H100i.

Just wondering if its normal that watching a movie online makes the temperature jump from around 33C to 45C... I mean its just a video... if i leave the video playing and select a different tab the temperature jumps back to around 33C and as soon as I switch over to the tab with the video the temperature jumps back up to around 45C.

After watching an episode of Big Bang Theory the temps reached a max of 55C.

No that is not normal... you definitely have a cooling issue. How many fans do you have in your case? You might just have bad airflow... what direction are those fans?

Front, side, and bottom should be intake ( if it has a side/bottom fan) top and back are exhaust.

So far so good i think, I installed the h100i and the msi gtx 970 today and after 20 minutes on AIDA64 the temps according to Core Temp are:

Core 0: max 53
Core 1: max 58
Core 2: max 57
Core 3: max 55

And according to Aida64 statistics:

Core 0: max 52
Core 1: max 57
Core 2: max 56
Core 3: max 54

Let me know if that seems okay... I think the fans may be running on full speed as I may have left the CPU fan setting in BIOS on full.

Either way corsair link reports Gigabyte Motherboard Fan at 2312Rpm, don't know why it says gigabyte motherboard fans but I think that refers the h100i fans. I left the stock ones on and so far the noise level seems fine to me.

Update: To answer your question I don't have a bottom fan... but the front is an intake and the back and top are out.

Oh great! Im glad it's not overheating anymore.

So how long do you recommend I run the AIDA64 test for to ensure stability and what other tests should I do to make sure my system is stable?

Would Intel Burn-in test be another test to carry out? And how long for?

Right, i was running the witcher 2 in the background, temps were around 40 to 50C mark and i got a blue screen, the windows shut down and rebooted back and everything is normal, im scared, what happened?

I passed very high on intel burn in on 10 runs as well...

It could be your 970 or perhaps your power supply. Is it an old power supply?

If it's new how long have you used it for?

Try reseating the 970 and reattaching the power cables.

This might not help but it narrows down the possible suspects of the crash which (hopefully) means you can get it identified and fixed sooner.

Since getting the 970 have you changed anything else? Software, hardware, etc, anything even if it's small.
