I've never overclocked before so i thought i might learn is segments.
Currertly got my I7 3770k at 4300mhz running stable after a 30 min stress test (prime 95) It reach a max temp of 60 degrees on full load. which i thought was good, however i would like to go higher.
Just need some advice on how hot should i feel uncomfortable? i was going to say around 65 degrees.
Is that too low or too high if your opinion

Voltage set to 1.300

Z87 pro asus mobo
H105 corsair water cooling unit.
1600mhz ddr3 ram

oops just crashed after a hour, going to increase the voltage, think i was being not generous enough for it. now set to 1.7

Is 1.7 a typo? You should have just increased it to 1.32 to 1.35. I'd say about 80-85 at load is the hottest that I'd allow it to run in Prime, and in real world usage with the CPU you won't even come close to that.

That is too hot. No more than 70 or so

But Prime isn't the threshold for overclocking a CPU pertaining to heat, scaling back on voltage and frequencies just because of the heat being generated in a thoroughly unrealistic stressing of a CPU being put through complex torture tests isn't utilizing that CPU to its fullest possible potential. Prime is good for stability tests, but that heat is something else. I had a 3770k overclocked to 4.9 ghz at 1.38 volts and I was getting 55 max temps in Prime for half day stress tests, but I also delidded it and was watercooling it, but I can imagine what the temps would have been like otherwise.

I think the thermal shutdown trips for a 3770k are like what, 103-105 c?

Omg, that's being generous. I never let my CPU exceed 60, I even get worried when it gets into the 50's. I also have a 3770k, but I want it to last for years. Running at that temp will seriously impact on the lifespan of the chip.

Getting 80 degrees C in Prime at 100% load for stability testing isn't going to give you 80 degree C temps with normal usage. I'm pretty sure that when I first started researching CPU's this was around the user recommended max temp for the 3770k, but given the right hardware and conditions it's easy to keep it cool even with a heavy overclock and during Prime stressing as well.

True, I do understand this. I just want to increases the longevity of the chip for as long as I can, considering the price!

Yeah, that's also understandable, but a couple hours at most to work out any kinks in stability with those kinda temps isn't going to degrade the lifespan of the chip.

True true. I guess you're right. (First time that's ever been said on the internet).

1.7 will destroy your CPU so I sincerely hope you haven't tried that. For a decent guide to overclocking an intel CPU, check out this page:

and also this page:

Both of those provide a fairly simple guide to successfully overclocking an Ivy Bridge CPU.

You set it to what? You're going to destroy your CPU in no time flat running voltages like that.

Keep it under 70-75c and you'll be fine. Fix your voltages. The max voltage I would recommend is 1.35V.
