I am about to build a new pc and the only parts I am going to use from the current RIG are as follows; disk drives, case, 750gb HD.

I just need help prepping for this build in regards to software. It seems a lot easier to build from the groud up, but I would really like to avoid purchasing a new OS. Could I get my windows activation code from this PC then proceed with my new SSD and do a fresh install using that code to renew windows? If I then wanted to install my old 750gb HD for additional storage what would I need to remove from it? Sorry for playing a thousand questions but I just have yet to do this. I have only built a few computers and they were all from scratch. Thanks!

For those interested my new build is as follows:
Intel E3-1241v3
Asus Z97-A LGA 1150 MOBO
ASUS GTX 780
Crucial MX100 256GB SSD
8B DDR3 @ 1600MHz
Corsair 750W Modular PSU

According to the ASUS site for that CPU. It says

*Intel Xeon Processor Family is designed for servers. Some features may not support when installed on 8 series chipsets.

So all / or most of the features on this CPU may not apply to this mobo / you

What version of windows 7 is currently installed? Did you buy it? Was it part of the system?

I currently have windows 7 professional, its running in a pc I built. I don't know that I have the install disk anymore but it is indeed activated.

^ Thanks a lot, that helps. I may just end up buying 8.1 and switching over to 64bit. My current Win7PRO is 32bit.. How would I go about clearing my current hard drive so that I could use it as a secondary storage drive without any conflict?

As for the xeon being designed for servers I read that as well, but most other z97 chip mobos state xeon support and say nothing of the lack of support. I think I may try my luck there though I am looking to get in touch with asus. I have already purchased that mobo but that is all so far. I really want to run that xeon though. I am not looking to overclock, and I like the fact it does not have a built in gpu as I am obviously going dedicated. Lower power usage is also a plus for me and 24/7 is more plausible.

If youre using another hdd for win8 just format/install windows, attach that win7 hdd after then format it. Then leave it in the case

That seems like it would be the easiest option. It was my initial plan but then I got to thinking there may be a way to save myself the $100.00
At this point ill be spending $1000.00 anyway so I mine as well just update software. Thanks a lot for your help Paul.

If anyone has affirmative information on my motherboard/cpu compatibility please let me know. Otherwise ill be getting in touch with ASUS asap to figure out what if any features may be lost.

The CPU is compatible, but like it says because youre not installing a server version of windows, you wont get the server features of the CPU

Oh okay fantastic it has to do with the difference in software I'd be using, I did not read it as such. Thanks for clearing that up for me. If it fires up and hyperthreading/turbo is working I would be happy with my purchase as I do not intend on using it as a server. Rather a capable low draw gaming computer.

Yup its just the version of windows, the CPU is on the CPU supported list. So it'll work on that mobo

AWESOME! I was worried for a bit there, and I had already bought the mobo so I could be mentally commited to that processor lol. Otherwise I am constantly back and fourth, and back and fourth between ideas. This way I can get my build on the move. My current setup isn't cutting it anymore, but hey parts are five years old..

Currently I am running the following, and its starting to show its age for sure..
I7 860 @ 2.80
MSI DR MOS LGA 1156
ASUS GTX 650
4GB 1333MHZ
750gb 7200rpm HD

I am very excited for this build, I greatly thank you for your knowledgeable and timely reply.
