Hi, so i've decided to upgrade my Cpu to the FX-8350 but am having some issues loading past the first stage of POST since installation.

My system has the ASRock 990FX Extreme3 mobo with 1x4gb of Corsair 1600Mhz RAM.

I was originally running a cheap Semphron 145 with UCC enabled and a lot of OC with no issues, and have most recently been borrowing a FX-6300 which ran great.

I switched between these processors a few times and never had to reset the CMOS for the computer to boot.

Prior to installing the 8350 I updated the BIOS to the latest available for my mobo through the following link as the site also suggests the 8350 is only supported following update 1.5

http://www.asrock.com/.....

Unfortunately things haven't gone as smoothly as before.

I've checked the 8350 in my other rig with an ASUS Sabertooth mobo and it booted up first time so the chip is fine.

I've hit a wall here and would appreciate any helpful comments :)

Thanks in advance

Does the Sempron still boot in the MB? It could have been a corrupted BIOS update.

I would test your board with another cpu just to see if the bios is properly updated.
if the bios is gone and you cannot get into the bios screen anymore, then you might have killed the board.
time for a full upgrade?

The FX-6300 still boots on the mobo so i'm sure that's not the problem. The semphy is no longer with me though

Did you update to BIOS 1.70? And did you update via the Win7 app and did it go well?

Yes i updated to 1.70 via the windows 7 launcher and it didn't appear to have any problems

Odd. When you updated your BIOS, it reverted back to default settings. Did you then go back into BIOS and reset anything you might have changed before?

How far do you get in the POST or Win7 boot sequence with the FX-8350 installed?

Oh right, when i updated the BIOS the ASRock loading screen appeared but failed to disappear. I left it sat for 10 minutes but nothing progressed. No windows loading and i am unable to edit any of the BIOS settings

Have you tried resetting the CMOS with the jumper (if that board uses the jumper method)? Remove the CMOS battery and use the jumper to short the BIOS reset pins for about 5 seconds. Remove the short, re-install the battery, and your BIOS should be at default settings. If that is still a fail...
If you can still boot with the borrowed FX-6300, try it and then do the above. Also you could enter BIOS then and set it to fail-safe defaults (or whatever Asrock calls it).

At that point, I am out of ideas and I would probably contact Asrock if it were me.

Ok so I've removed the gpu, because it was in the way of the CMOS battery, and removed the CMOS battery as well as putting the jumper into the reset position and left it overnight. Went back the next day and put the 8-core in and viola.
Not sure why this didn't work first time but i'm toting it down ton impatience.

On a separate note i have also found these two windows updates designed to improve the performance of AMD FX processors and the likes. I wondered if anyone had used these and whether they provide any increase in performance.

Good to hear that the issue is solved for you. Maybe the first time you did the CMOS reset, you didn't unplug the PSU and remove the battery. Also, sometimes it takes around 5 seconds with the jumper on to completely clear (discharge) the BIOS settings.

Those are old fixes that are not needed anymore since SP1. They didn't do all that much good anyway.
Don't forget to enter BIOS and change back any settings you needed to be different from default.
