AMD FX-8350 bottleneck?

Alright, so a month or two back I posted a thread asking why I'm getting lower FPS than I should with this PC, and I was told it's the CPU bottlenecking my GPU considering my screen resolution is pretty low(1366x768), and I was alright with that, thinking that getting a 1920x1080 screen would later fix it. So, I connected my PC to my TV screen which is a 1920x1080 screen and tried playing Crysis 3, I was shocked to see that I was BARELY getting around 30 FPS. I tried OC'ing my CPU up to 4.6(stock cooler, can't go any higher), and it showed nothing but a little difference. I really have no idea why and would appreciate any help.

My specs:

Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX Killer
CPU: AMD FX-8350
RAM: G. Skill RipjawsX 8 GB(2x4) CL9 1.35v
Video Card: Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 4 GB GDDR5
Power Supply: XFX ProSeries XXX Edition 850W 80+ Bronze

Hello,

Have you changed the in-game resolution as well, from 768p to 1080p? If so, dial down the graphics settings from ULTRA to MEDIUM and see the results. Also, open Task Manager and see what the CPU is doing during the game.

so, are you getting better or worse fps in crysis with the increased screen resolution? It's a pretty brutal game if you try play it on ultra, try backing off the detail settings. If you oc the cpu and there is little difference then the cpu is not the bottleneck.

theres something for you to compare

you got a problem there bro, maybe you need to update your driver.

fx-8350 (no need to oc) paired with a r9 290 will destroy crysis 3 at 1080p ultra high settings.

It was basically around 25-45 while OC'd to 4.6 on 1080, and yes, I did change the resolution. I assume this is sort of acceptable? Need your opinion on that.

EDIT: Looking back at the graph back there, no, it isn't, at all. Anyway, if it's not the CPU, then what the heck could it be?

what version of windows are you running? and what amd drivers are you using?

might be a software issue.

Check in the settings in CCC what the refresh rate is set for your TV - I have seen this same problem, sometimes it defaults to 30hz for some TVs causing really bad FPS lag.

is that a 64 bit windows 7, hmm i just checked 14.6 is the latest stable might wanna try that.

lastest dx drivers too or mantle.

then yep the resolution and refresh rate of our screen or monitor - 60hz i believe is standard.

anymore than that, something is really wrong with your hardware.

60hz, yeah, and I'll update the driver although I highly doubt that's why I'm losing like 30 FPS here. Yeah, I'm beginning to feel like something IS really wrong with my hardware, and it's either my processor or GPU considering I changed the RAM since the last time and I doubt anything else is the problem here. Could it be my CPU temperature? I really doubt that, but it goes up to 70 C and above under load. Really, I'm just quite upset right now considering I went through a lot to pay for this.

Are you using stock cooler? If so, yes its very possible and fairly common.

Yes, I am. Do you think it would affect my CPU performance this much?

Yes.

The stock cooler is useless, I wouldnt overclock at all using it.

Change it for something better ASAP. The Hyper 212 Evo is good as a budget cooler.

hmm does fx series have turbo boost features??.. try disabling the turbo boost feature and go test it.

that was my prob w/ my previous a8-6600k paired with a 650 ti boost - but i could play crysis 3 on high settings 30-50 fps max

now i upgraded to intel i5 4460 still with my 650 ti boost - could play crysis 3 on ultra settings 40-60 fps max

The problem is not with overclocking right now, as you can see in the graph above, I'm getting nowhere near 49.5 average FPS, not to mention that my video card beats the GTX 680. It is basically reaching 30 average while overclocked, let alone without any overclocking, that's not acceptable in my opinion. The temperatures are high, sure, but would it really hold my CPU back that much?

Yes it would. Its probably throttling performance.

I'll take your word for it then. We'll see when I get a CPU cooler.

Im surprised it even got to 4.6Ghz on the stock cooler to be honest.

Make sure you get something decent, clean off the old thermal paste before applying new.
