If it's powered by USB only, I'd suggest to change the USB cable because it might not be getting enough power.
I'd also recommend to run Command prompt (run as admin)
Then type: chkdsk x: /r (Where x - is the drive letter assigned to your HD)
If this doesn't work, then I suggest to download a tool from your HDD's manufacturer (For WD drives it's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics, you can run it on any external). This tool will help you perform more detailed diagnostics on the drive.
