4k or 1440p w/ Gsync?

I can't decide. I'm smashing my face on the keyboard. 2x GTX 980 SLI with Asus Pb287Q 4k monitor,

OR

2x GTX 970 w/ ROG Swift Monitor (1440p w/ Gsync).

What I want, really, truly, madly, deeply, is a *wow* experience. What is going to make my jaw drop more?

thanks

Understandable, I've just heard great things about G sync, and i'm upgrading from 1080p, *and* it saves 500$. So maybe the 4k will look great, but will frames be slow and cause choppiness? Will the upgrade to 1440p be nice, with a 144hz monitor to boot?

I'm totally happy if 4k will look awesome, and if the 980's will last a long time with it. But if 1440p +gsync + high-end monitor features will compete very closely, maybe its best to save the 500$

Thought I wholey hear you, and agree with your point (futureproofing), benchmarks for 980 SLI are putting FPS at ~60 at ultra w/ AA for current gen games. I'm not sure I can agree that I'll have 20 fps problems just yet. could you elaborate on why you like 60fps?

I have a 4k monitor and i can say gaming is not of the best experience. I know I have one R9 290X but I have AA always disabled. In games, the resolution is not "really" 3840x2160, it's just scaled 1080p and puts huge strain on the graphics cards.

I would highly consider option number two, you'll love gaming that way much more.

Some games do actually take advantage of 4k, but the required setup is even more intense.

I've never heard of this 1080p scaling you speak of, i must say it is shocking. I can't imagine the coder who wrote rendering that way.

I'm leaning towards the 1440p ROG as well, i'll probably avoid many headaches browsing the net and in apps at the 4k resolution anyways. but may I ask why you dont enjoy 4k? I've seldom heard negative reviews of them. which monitor are you using?

lastly, are you saying that 2xgtx980 is not "intense" enough for 4k? It would be surprising, I get 45-60fps with 3x1080p surround monitors on my current evga 760 4gb. I can't imagine the adding 1 more screen's worth of rendering would crash when comparing 1 760 to 2 980's...

these are the demanding games of yesteryears @4k

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/geforce_gtx_980_sli_review,23.html

with newer videogames, visual fidelity goes up so as the gpu horsepower needed to run them. 4k gaming is a good 2 generations away.

as for the 60+fps part, when games run near or past that 60fps number, the animation becomes more life-like, more fluid.

just so you know Acer made a 4k gsync monitor that refreshes at 60
I believe msrp was 900?
So 100 more than the asus you were looking at.
The Asus does have better colors I believe (don't take my word for it, look it up. I haven't used either) and is better for competitive purposes with the 144 hz refresh and 1 ms response time
Either one is gonna be an excellent choice

If this is for gaming then get the ASUS PG278Q ROG Swift http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MSOND8C. You would be sillly to go with anything over this option if this is a gaming monitor. I've got the VG248QE with G-Sync and it's amazing.

If you're doing video editing/rendering or anything other than gaming then get the ASUS PB287Q http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KJGY3TO. The picture quality of this monitor will be better but the performance will leave you dissatisfied if you have experienced a true gaming monitor.

It's really as simple as this. Do you want a gaming monitor or a monitor for anything but gaming?

Just a couple notes.
1) 1440p G-sync does not require 120FPS+ to be great. G-sync's selling point is that it has variable refreshes, so it can handle 50/70/45/95 FPS without you noticing any stutter.

2) There is no requirement to max out all details in games. 4K at high settings, can often look better than 1440p at Ultra settings. Adjust settings, and 4K is a real option.

I personally would go 1440p G-sync, because fluid motion is far more important to me than the extra clarity of 4K.

The low end 4k monitors don't impress me, In my opinion The ROG swift and a IPS/PLS monitor look better than a low end 4k monitor.

The high end 4k monitors that use technology similar to IPS technology look better but they are very expensive...

"I Just came back from Japan and they have the ROG swift on display in many shops in Akihabara"
