Just wondering your thoughts on this build. Building for my girlfirend. Curious if it will run most games on at least high.

Mostly a solid build.

Do not use that SSD though, Kingston used second rate, low quality NAND in the newer versions than the reviews said.
An MX100 Crucial is cheap and good.

And I would get a bit of a better PSU, although that one isn't completely bad.

Also the Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO is better than the Gimini and the same price.

Single 8GB chip, bad choice.
500W of a a-little-less-than-mediocre PSU for a R9 280x, not a good idea.

If one builds in a micro-ATX form factor and may want to upgrade later, then using a single stick initially isn't too bad a choice.

I've had a Kingston ssdnow v300 before the update and I have a new one after too. They both perform the same. I notice no difference. Its a solid ssd. The power supply on the other hand. Avoid corsair CX units. Seasonic, antec and xfx are ideal brands. Corsairs ax units are good though.

I disagree, 8GB is plenty for now, but losing the extra performance that dual channel would provide is pretty significant in comparison.

Its not about performance alone, RELIABILITY is a problem.

We'll have to agree to disagree on whether around 5% on memory performance is "significant" and can be measured or observed by a casual user outside of a benchmark.

True enough.

why the i3 over the fx 6300? and other than switching the gtx 760 out for the r9 280x is everything else alright?

My only reason for that is that your CPU will not be the bottleneck on your graphics card. If you need more CPU, then the Intel motherboard will support much more powerful (and less power-hungry) processors with better performance, so your upgrade costs in the near future would be less - while processors with the LGA 1150 socket are still mainline.

I see what you mean, are they around the same performance wise?

No, the i3 is a lesser processor than the FX 6300 - but your graphics card may bottleneck first in many games. ANd if you want to upgrade, then an Intel i5 that completely outperforms anything AMD has can just go into the same setup without changing any other component.

so basically i should just save the time and go straight for the i5 series?

if you have the money. But then you should get a bigger graphics card as well. And the bigger graphics card may need a bigger PSU... :(

Look at the 2nd build (the $800 one) I linked in my earliest post on this thread.

that still uses the 280x tho, wouldnt be too bad and would probably end up more future proof than the i3 or the fx 6300..
