We have DSL that runs through our PHONE line here. I went to the store and bought a LINKSYS WRT 1900AC Dual Band Gigabit Wi-Fi Router because we are having problems with getting disconnected all the time. Got it home and opened it up and I cant use it because it requires a Ethernet Cable where I use a Phone line to link to the net. My question is this: Can I still use the Router with my modem (I found out where I messed up. I need a modem not a router) to boost the speed im getting through our modem? Its just a cheap one that our ISP which is our phone company, sent us when we signed on. If I cant use this to help with speeding up the connection, Can someone recommend a good DSL Modem that uses the Phone line for internet? My budget for the modem is $200.00. I would really appreciate any help you guys can give me. Ive looked into the modems myself but Im confused about them and I cant find what I need. I need a PHONE LINE DSL MODEM with Wireless Capability. Thanks guys.

The LYNKSYS has no place for me to insert my phone cord. I do not have cable. Its DSL through our phone lines. The phone line connector is much smaller than that of the Network Cables.

I do however have a plain modem with no Wi-Fi capabilities and one place for an ethernet/Network cable. Can I use it to hook to the LYNKSYS Router so that I have Wi-Fi and will it perform better than the crappy one my ISP sent me? Its an Old Actiontech thats been issued and reissued and more than likely refurbished a time or two. I know Ive had it for 3 years now and its older than that. If the LYNKSYS will work with the regular modem and give us better speeds and Wi-Fi I will keep it and use it. I gave $250 for it yesterday and was bummed when I saw I couldnt use it

Can anyone help me please? I will be leaving going to town soon to take this back and need to know if it will work with what I have or not and a suggestion on a REAL GOOD DSL MODEM which connects with a phone ine and with Wi-Fi capabilities for around 200-250 bucks if it wont work

It should work. If possible you want to run it in bridge mode and run pppoe on your linksys router. You can though if it is to complex to get it into bridge mode just run a router behind a router. Most the downside to doing this is related to double NAT and the problems it causes with some applications...mostly game consoles.

You other option is to run your linksys router as a AP. You will lose some of the features related to the routing function.

Now adding a new router may make it more stable. It may not drop as much if the wireless was your issue. It will not though make it much if any faster. DSL tends to be pretty slow connection and almost any router can run faster than a dsl connection.

If you are dropping the DSL connection itself then you need to verify there are no issues with the wires coming into your house and then have the ISP come out and test to be sure there is no issue before you go to the trouble of replacing a modem.
