I was told that this processor is an OC version and wouldn't work well with my mobo

Well i don't know where in the specs it says the processor is overclocked. I recently found a better processor in my opinion as well, so I need to know if for a gaming computer, this mobo/cpu combo will work well.

Thanks for any help

Z97 board and an I5-4690k are an appropriate pair. Z and K series are for overclocking

I see the problem. In fact the cpu and the mobo is compatible but you will have to overclock the cpu manually through BIOS to achieve your needs.

As I see, you was bad informed.

CPU and motherboard are perfectly compatible, that CPU by default have a "Turbo Mode" that is a basic overclock for high load on CPU. You are good with those two components and you don't need to change anything in the rig.
