ssd surprising benchmark speeds!

My samsung 840 Evo is showing very high read and write speeds
Is that even possible?

I tried up to 4 different bencmarkers and here some results


Samsung magician software shows even higher speeds (up to 4200MB/s on both sequential read and write)

That is because Magician uses your system memory like a ram disk to speed up access. Its cool. I saw 9000MBs on my 840 pros using it.

If you are using Samsung magician, it is using ram as cache, and that is inflating the benchmark numbers.

And is that a good thing (should I keep using Samsung Magician)? How noticeable would be the difference if I turn it off ?
FYI, I find my transfert rates still poor compared to my external 3TB HDD (140 MB/s ssd vs 90MB/s HDD)

I found that the ssd is so fast for most work which is random that I saw no performance difference.
At one time I had a problem which I suspect was magician related so I turned it off.

For large sequential transfers, the ability of the ssd nand chips to accept continuous updates is perhaps limited.
Bulk storage of large files such as video's is better done on a hard drive anyway.

Be skeptical of ssd benchmarks.

They are done with apps that push the SSD to it's maximum using queue lengths of 30 or so.
Most desktop users will do one or two things at a time, so they will see queue lengths of one or two.
What really counts is the response times, particularly for small random I/O. That is what the os does mostly.
For that, the response times of current SSD's are remarkably similar. And quick. They will be 50X faster than a hard drive.
In sequential operations, they will be 2x faster than a hard drive, perhaps 3x if you have a sata3 interface.
Larger SSD's are preferable. They have more nand chips that can be accessed in parallel. Sort of an internal raid-0 if you will.
Also, a SSD will slow down as it approaches full. That is because it will have a harder time finding free nand blocks to do an update without a read/write operation.

I no longer run Magician either. It was causing issues with my OS. It works well most of the time though.

Just for clarification, its not the Magician that's doing that, its RAPID mode which becomes a separate service when you enable it within Magician. You do not need Magician running for RAPID mode to work.
