Hey Guys!

I have a MSI 970A G46- which is bad for overclocking, which means i need a new one. I am on a relay tight budget but i am selling my mobo for half what it costs new, and buying a Asrock 970 Pro3 R 2.0 (wich is cheaper than my board new...WHAT ?) anyway, the coolermaster HYPER 212 evo dosent fit in my case! and i also need new ram (i have 4 gb)

So should i just get the pro3 and buy a Coolermaster GeminII ? what would be the best desicision with a limited amoutn of money ? also how far could i overclock to with these specs :
{i would also like to OC my GPU, would my PSU allow ?}

CPU: AMD FX 6300 black edition
GPU: Gigabyte Radon HD7850 OC editon
Mobo: ASrock 970 Pro3 R2.0
PSU: Coolermaster GX 550
RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance 4GB (2 x 2GB)
HDD: 500gb Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm

Thanks ! appreciate any help
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
extra information:

CPU heatsync: Coolermaster GeminII (or maybe hyper 212 if i take side fan off)

- I could also get a Coolermaster V8 for really cheap but it wont fit in my case.

Case cooling: 1x 200 , 3x 120 case fans (if i got the hyper 212 there would have to be no 200mm fan)

I live in south africa so parts are limited and realy expensive: pricecheck.co.za

The Asrock pro3 has just as many power phase regulator as MSI 970A-G46 Which is 4+1 phase control

Short story, do not expect a better overclockability with this board.

Can you affors Asus M5a97 EVO (6+1) or the Gigabyte GA-970a UD3P (8+2) ??
These two a great value in US and would give you nicer overclock

i only found the M5a97 EVO on your website for 1667 : http://www.pricecheck.co.za/offers/23500088/Asus+M5A97+...

Thanks so much for the reply XD

ok, that board is out my budget, i would just like to overclock to 4 Ghz or so. maybe i could get a
MSI 990FXA-GD65 V2 ? that is still out of my budget tho. would i not be able to find a compromise ? my budget is around R1300.

Thanks :D

Ok but i looked to your PSU and cooler master GX is poor quality unless it's GX II. Overclocking is not recommended with your PSU which is Tier 4 PSU :

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1804779/power-su...

most likely, your system will freeze/shutdown every time you will load your CPU if overclocked.

Also, your actual motherboard has very poor thermal design, so I would not recommend keeping it to overclock. But yeah the GD65 is great for overclocking.

Could you get an older GA-970A-UD3 as opposed to the UD3P? Or maybe even a GA-990XA-UD3? I've seen both going for really cheap because they're EOL and both are awesome for overclocking on (I have an FX6300 @ 4.5GHz on a 970A-UD3).

Get the UD3P , it has a 8+2 power phase design and is great for overclocking if in the right setup.

i have looked for it from the website he provided to check price in his country and this board is unavailable. Also, his PSU isn't great.

Oh, I should add that I have absolutely no idea about the GeminiII, but for a similar price, you can get a Seidon 120v... which isn't the best (infact, it's probably the worst when it comes to AIO watercoolers), but it's what I have cooling my FX 6300 and it beats the Arctic A30 that I had previously (which is similar in performance to a 212 Evo).

Thanks for all the reply's

I decided to not overclock at all, because that would mean i would have to buy an new mobo AND psu, so im gonna buy a 1 tb SSHD instead. I have already overclocked my GPU. I have one question: can i use OC genie II 1 sec oc for a SLIGHT overclock(CPU) ?

Thanks for all the help really appreciate it. If you have any suggestion please say so.

Awesome! Temps shouldn't be a big deal unless you up the voltage, I can get my FX 6300 to 4.3GHz at stock voltage, but I would do a little more stability testing if I were you.

It is preferable to copy the settings into the BIOS when you do find a stable overclock when using an app, tough I'm not really sure why because I've never used an app to overclock so I don't know of any potential issues and others will hopefully come along with a far better answer there.

Ya Thanks! XD
OC genie isnt really an app its built into the bios

I have another problem now :(  , my passmark score is 6500 (without OC) 7500 (with OC) (aproximatley). others are getting 9000 stock! is it my motherboard ?

Please help XD

7500 is what I would expect from a very mild overclock. The average Passmark CPU mark is 6355 on their own table (http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php) ;)

Is that overclock stable after atleast an hour of testing by the way? You could maybe get it up to 4.1GHz (stock turbo speed) on 1.3v and have you disabled turbo and all the power saving features?

Thanks for the reply!

Oh i didnt know that XD i just watched this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmHJVZdvIZM

anyway yes its stable, but what would happen when its not stable ? what are the side effects of an unstable oc ? anyway, i used OC genie II so it does the clocks automatically, beacause people say i have a bad mobo an psu, so im scared to take it further :p

Thanks for the help !

If your overclock isn't stable, your computer could either fail to start up, randomly freeze or randomly BSOD.
