How to recover data from floppy disk with read/write(?) error?

Before owning a computer I bought what was called at the time in 1989 a Personal Word Processor. Looks like a typewriter with daisy wheel printing, but also had LCD screen to type and edit and standard 3-1/2" FDD to store and retrieve files. Model was Panasonic KX-W1000. This machine still works but it did have one flaw. The FDD has internal rubber belt which stretches and deteriorates over time. I have had to replace the belt about every 5 years. Replacements are available from generic belt mfrs. and the PWP is still working but every time the belt reaches the end of its life, if I happen to be writing a file to the disk at that moment, I get a "Disk Error" message and after that I am unable to access any files on that disk even after I put in a new belt in the FDD. I assume that either the file I was writing is corrupted due to the belt failure or some other writing failure has occurred to the disk. The software on the PWP is proprietary. The disks cannot be read by any computer, at least not in their normal operating mode. Is there a way to recover the files on this disk and how would a person or commercial disk recovery service go about it? I have called this a read/write error. Is that the correct way to describe it? There is no physical damage to the disk. I don't know if this is a useful clue, but the owners manual says under the above error message: "Information cannot be accessed or the disk is not formatted." Thanks.
