when i play games my cpu temperature is 80-90

i have i7 4970k
g skill 16gb 2400 memory
enermax t40 blacktwister cpu cooler

when i played arma 3 my temps are always at 80-90 degrees
when i play counter strike source 60-70

why is this happening?

Thats too high. Remove the cooler, reapply new paste and remount your cooler.

Intel gives the max for that processor as 105C before it starts to thermal throttle. These can get hotter than previous generations of CPUs. So I wouldn't call it too unusual.

Still wouldn't be a bad idea to try and get it down at least into the 70s, though. Do what he said and check the thermal paste is applied right; I'd also look at airflow in the case as potentially adding a few degrees.

In my opinion they seem to be ok as arma is a very cpu intensive game and can cause it to go to high temp. As you have a high end cpu I would expect the temps to be high. You can always try and cool it down by using a better cooling system and making sure non of the air vents are blocked. Also make sure that the settings you are playing are what is recommended for your gpu or otherwise the temps will rise like crazy.
