Hi everyone,

We are considering building a web host for our retail store. We are putting the finishing touches on having a database driven website built but the old linux hosting is not cutting it. We currently pay for outside hosting but I think I want to try an host it in house. We are currently hosting our office Exchange server, file server, active directory and quickbooks enterprise access on a machine with desktop level components but i am looking to add another box with solid performance which will handle the .net and sql and possibly the exchange server and leave the current box for file server, active directory duties.

To make a long story short should I build a big, serious dual processor machine or should i stick with a beefed up desktop machine? The dual processor options cost about three times more than the desktop option so I want to try and be cost effective.

In this day and age hosting a server on the Internet is absolutely and totally high risk for people that are not knowledgeable with security issues. Please reconsider this decision - especially reconsider hosting it in the same network as your business-critical servers and applications.

Linode offers very affordable hosting. We have 2 hosts there and it is great. My partner is right now upgrading the production web host to get around the BASH issues. I can tell you that I live every day in dread wondering if today wil be the day our servers get hacked.

I very much concur. Why would you not take advantage or a hosted webserver? Let somebody else be responsible for a lot of the security infrastructure. Spread the costs over hundreds of web servers and not just yours.
