I am using Windows 8.1 on a UEFI system. when I tried to install Ubuntu 14.04 alongside it using an USB drive, it was installed but I can't boot to Ubuntu. It always boots to Windows. One odd thing I noticed was-during installation, Ubuntu didn't seem to find windows as it normally does and suggests to make a dual booting bootloader. I created custom partitions and installed it.

On UEFI bios settings , do the following basic steps :

1. Enter your BIOS and disable UEFI boot or enable legacy boot.
2. While running the setup for linux, do not select "Install Alongside Windows" option. It causes a conflict. Create a separate partition and the install linux there.

I assume you have never actually done this. You would quickly find your Windows installation Unbootable if you enable legacy boot.

I don't think that will help. cause windows is installed on a GTP partition and if I install Ubuntu by disabling UEFI, I won't be able to boot to windows anymore...
