Windows XP was dumb about multiple drives.

If you just let windows autorun it would assign the C: drive label to a drive if there was already a partition established, despite putting Windows on a different partition.

The best way to avoid this is to just disconnect all other hard drives, flash drives, and sd readers before installing windows XP. In the case of having two OS on the same partitiion you should install XP first so that XP does not label the other OS's patition as C:

Because XP is not on C drive, the registry keys and folder structure is set to the new drive letter, just trying to change the drive letter without reinstallig XP will break the XP install and make it unusable.

That error may be due to lazy programing.

Applicaiton programs should program their installs to %WinDir%\FolderPath.. but there are many programs just written as C:\FolderPath.. Thus if your OS drive is not the C drive, it wont work right.

Irregardless you will have to reinstall windows XP.
Try following option 2 of this link: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/8057-dual-boot-ins...

If that link does not work then you wil have to have to format both OS installs, install XP and then install Win 7 as that is the only way to garantee success. Win XP also likes to overwrite the MBR when it is installed second, which you dont want.

The only other option would be to install XP as VM instead, and then instead of dual boot you would have to run the XP VM inside Win7

Which drive is Win7 not detecting, the external or the win XP disk?
