Hello all,

I'm seeking some helpful advice/suggestions on a PC build that can support high-end games as well as day-day functionality for the long-haul. I am currently operating on a PC with a crap 7 year old processor that is having trouble operating more than 2 programs at once. Time to upgrade!

I have done some research and would like to use either an i5 or i7. Ideally, I would like the total budget range to be under $600-700. That said, I obviously am aware with an i7 that price range of a build is probably a pipe-dream for gaming specs, but any suggestions are welcome. The other main factor here is memory, as I do all my schooling online and a large amount of other day-day work, and would like 16gb preferably.

Does anyone have any build ideas/suggestions? A list of compatible options would be greatly appreciated!

If this is just for the hardware, then I would go with this. 8gb is still sufficient for a gaming rig. Get 8gb now, and another 8gb later, when funds allow, if you really need it.

do you really need 16GB, very very few do, I can game and run a Virtual machine and only just go over 8GB. The reason for asking is that RAM is really expensive right now and the extra 8GB will probably be 10% of your budget for not a lot of performance.

Your budget is (in my opinion) too small for "high end games" you need to add another 200 in my opinion.

You could however start with an i3, and a decent GPU and then later get an i7, for non-time sensitive applications, i.e. you are being paid to use it and an extra 30s here and there helps, then I'd say that you'll not notice the difference between i3 and i7.

For a single monitor system, 8gb, I agree is plenty. I often wish I had 16gb, so I could run without a pagefile. I tried and got low memory warnings. I have dual monitors and game while having hard telling many tabs open in chrome, with netflix/hulu+ or whatever playing at the same time. (Sometimes I stream video off my file server too.)

This looks great, thanks. What would you suggest for a cooler?

What wattage would you suggest? First time build, just wanted to clarify.
