I'm using an AMD X4 860k CPU with a Gigabyte GA-F2A55M-S1 motherboard. So far it hasn't been able to POST. I am wondering if I need to flash the BIOS for this combination of MOBO and CPU? I just read about this today and I hope it's not the case because I don't have another processor.

So it can post? whats the problems you are having?

I would flash bios last.

It cannot post. I am trying to figure out why it cannot. I returned the mobo once and got a new one of the same model, and have tried 6 different sticks of RAM. I don't know what the problem is.

Your MOBO has the 12 pin power and a 4 pin to the left of the CPU. Make sure both are secure.

Pull all sticks of ram but 1.

Make sure the monitor is plugged in (on the onboard if possible)

Are you using onboard or standalone GPU when it is not posting?

Admittedly, the first time I tried to run it I didn't have the 4 pin power cable plugged in. But I quickly found that and have had secure connections since.

Have tried all combinations of RAM. I probably started with both in, but since have tried each one alone (two different sets so a total of 4 different sticks by themselves).

I've tried both onboard (VGA) and GPU (HDMI, VGA to DVI) but am currently trying with just onboard and the GPU removed.

Hmmm... New MOBO, same thing.

I would try a new monitor next, or test this one on another system.

Check to make sure the CPU is seated correctly and no pins are bent.

Then a new CPU.

Do you get any beeps when you try to turn it on?

Everything turns on but nothing posts right?

The VGA monitor and HDMI monitors are different, both stay black. They also both work for other things so I know they're good.

So originally, I got no beeps when RAM was plugged in and tried to fire it up. The only time I would get a beep was when there was no RAM inserted and I tried to power on. The beep is long and continuous, 2 tone (honestly idk how to describe it other than continuous really). But now, no matter what RAM I have in the mobo, I get the same beep that used to only happen when there was no RAM. So I'm pretty sure my mobo is messed up now.

I bought this stuff from Tiger Direct and I feel weird (and slightly annoyed) about going back and returning so many components. They aren't great support wise either for a first time builder.

Thanks, that's a more thorough thread than what I've seen previously.

And yeah there is a Micro Center about 10 miles from me - what about it?

Replaced the mobo last night, nothing changed. I'm going to get a new CPU. AMD X4 860K -> AMD X4 760K

The new CPU did it. I purchased an AMD A6 6400k and am installing Windows now.

GA-F2A55M-S1 (A55 chipset) Only supports Kaveri chips with a newer-than-stock BIOS. If I planned on a new Kaveri build I'd be careful to get a very new board with a revision guaranteed to support it out of the box. If it's a budget build I'd take A58 over A55. For example sticking with Gigabyte as an example the GA-F2A58M-S1 (A58) supports Kaveri with the release BIOS - which would at least allow you to POST and get going, although I tend to update the BIOS anyway if a newer one is available. FWIW the A58 board I mentioned is like $46 on Newegg. I know you bought from Tiger but I would have returned the board for something like that.

A few premium mainboards (a couple of RoG models?) support flashing via USB without a CPU. I wish that was more common.

I did end up switching out my mobo for a GA-F2A58M-HD2 (I believe) primarily for USB 3.0 and sata 3 compatibility before I identified that the CPU BIOS was causing the problem but it was still incompatible. I just wish I had known about this earlier before the week of headaches but hey live and learn I guess. This will be the first thing I check in my next build.
