So, should I get a very high end i5 CPU for gaming or higher end i7 gives sodarnmuch of a boost that I should go for that? From what I have been told, higher end i7 isn't worth it and I should just go for high end i5.

Go for an i5 as far as gaming is concerned ,any quad core cpu gives you the performance.

See the benchmarks here ,they give a clear indication.Go for an i7 only if you are into video editing and other intensive stuff. They are virtually the same chip with the i5 sometimes being faster in single threaded applications which most are .The i7 is only faster in multi threaded applications which very few games utilize and even then the difference is not discernible.

you were told right a high end i7 doesnt have much performance benefit over a good i5 so if you dont want to spend a lot then go with the i5 as it will be cheaper than the i7 and you wont suffer in terms of performance loss

The i7 4790k is also 500 MHz faster than the i5 4690k. In some games the 4790k is better than the 4690k because of the higher frequency. CPU speed matter more in some games than others. In my opinion and if I had the money, if I had to choose between a 4790k and a 4690k for a gaming PC I would choose a 4790k provided that I don't skimp out on the video card and RAM.
