Does longer USB extension cable decreases my 3G signal?

Hi,

So, I have a 3G USB dongle, shitty one, and I found a good spot that has good signal. Though, my USB extension cable is too short. So, simple question.

Does the 3G signal decreases the longer ur extension cable is? If No. Then, check this.
Connecting a external USB Hub to e.x any USB ports on my pc. And then, connect my 3G dongle with an USB extension cable to the USB hub. Would ´that decrease my signal?

I dno if extension cables affects signal :p

Yes and No.

An extension cable will not change your 3G reception.
Now usb requires a ack (acknowledgement) from its device, so if the extension cable gets too long without some type of signal rebroadcast device (like a hub) then the voltage in the wire will reduce and degrade the USB communication to the 3g modem.

Since you are using a hub in between you should be just fine.

For future reference, 15-20ft max is about the limitation of usb without a repeater/amplifier.

It may, it depends on how long you want to go. Back when I started my business, I couldn't afford security cam's, so I used a mismatch of all my webcams and friends webcams. Some times, adding 1 more extension would be the difference between getting a clear picture from the cam and nothing, so it does degrade over distance. How much, you'd have to try.

On the very same subject, a 10m usb extention active repeater cable works with a wifi adapter to get a signal from rooftop.
What i would like to know is if a powered hub at the far end would allow extra network shared hdd storage devices to be connected? hence one usb to connect to laptop and all devices out of harms way leaving just one lead to connect up after booting up?
