Old hard drive, new machine. Won't boot.

I recently upgraded my entire system, which included a new SSD and a fresh install of windows. I kept my old standard drive (which is in perfect working condition) and it is plugged into SATA 2 (my new SSD is in SATA 1). BIOS and Windows 7 (from the SSD) both recognize the drive, and all my files are there and accessible. However, when I go into BIOS and select it as the boot device, it fails, I get a really quick flash of a blue screen, and then it reverts back to booting from the SSD. I figured I could just select it as the boot device and it would fire up and I'd be running the new computer from the old drive...is that not the case? Does it change things since its a second drive? I don't plan on using it much, maybe only for the occasional forgotten file....

Solution
When you change the mobo you are going to have to reinstall windows. Your windows copy is looking for your old hardware.

You cannot install a old HDD with windows into a new machine and expect it to boot correctly.

Did your upgrade include a new motherboard ("entire system" would seem to indicate that you did). If so then you can't just plug the hard disk in and expect it to work; it doesn't have the right drivers for the new system. If you are now booting from the SSD, why would you need to boot from the old drive?

Thanks for the quick info guys. Yeah def new MB. Like I said, I don't really NEED the old drive....But I guarantee there are some things on there that I will eventually remember that I really wanted. I'm pretty unorganized when it comes to computers....its kinda just how I function.

Are there any tricks to get new drivers on the old drive and have it work?
