Hi everyone,

I'm new to system building, and have noticed some heavy duty throttling on my i5-3570k system lately.

I installed HWMonitor to check the temps, and the CPU is idling at 96C, and shoots up to 104C under a load, before throttling kicks in and it starts to cool down.

I'm using the stock CPU cooler with the pre-installed thermal compound - since this system isn't overclocked at all, I thought that would be fine.

I'm using a Carbide 400R case - One rear 120mm exhaust fan and Two front-mounted 120mm intake fans. All these fans seem to be spinning at normal speed (along with the CPU fan).

The system temp is coming up at 30C, so it's just the processor that is running super hot.

I've cleaned out all the dust and everything, but temps stayed the same.

How should I start troubleshooting this? Buy an aftermarket CPU cooler and premium thermal compound? Add more fans to the case?

Any help that you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

You could buy an aftermarket cooler.

if you dont want to spend the money on the above i would at least remove the cooler, clean the old paste and reinstall new paste.

If that does not help i would look further into troubleshooting.

Roger that - will replace the past and see if that fixes it. If not, I think I'm going to get a Hypercooler 212 EVO - probably overkill for a non-OC system, but better safe than sorry.

Update - took the heatsink and fan apart and cleaned them really good, removed old thermal paste and replaced it, and put it all back on. It's still running hot, so I used SpeedFan to make the CPU fan run at 100% - now the system will idle at 47C, but shoots back up to 100C + once the processor starts getting a heavy load. The strange thing is that the heatsink never gets hot at all - it's like it's not absorbing the heat.

I'm not sure what else to try. I think I'll order an aftermarket CPU cooler - but it won't be here until at least after the weekend. Meanwhile, I have to use the computer for work - I think I'll keep the CPU fan at 100% speed and try not to put a load on the processor until I replace the cooler.

Anybody else got any ideas?

Sounds like the cooler isn't mounted right.

I checked that too - but all four legs are locked in and expanded on the back of the motherboard, it's rock solid (doesn't move at all) and is sitting flush and tight with the processor, and the power connector is clear out of the way, so it's mounted normally as far as I can tell.

New cooler will be here tomorrow or the next day - hope that fixes it :) .

Make sure the CPU voltage didn't accidentally get cranked up. If the new cooler doesn't fix it the internal thermal bond inside the CPU may be bad

RMA the cpu, if still possible. They may have messed up the application of tim between the die and ihs. Thats nothing you could fix without delidding it.

New CPU cooler and still getting the heat problems - I'm thinking it has to be the CPU at this point. I'm going to try to RMA it, thanks for all the help.
