I need a new motherboard for my pc. Unfortunately I'm tight on money and I really do not want to buy the wrong thing, but I refuse to pay someone $250 to fix it. So, can someone help me out? I have a s5213w hp compaq slimline.

I found this motherboard on Newegg that has AM2+ processor support:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1681...

It's also Micro-ATX just like your old motherboard and your CPU will be compatible even if your CPU is AM2 (AM2+ is backwards compatible)
Here's a reference http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/960GC-GS%20FX/?cat=CPU

So the motherboard I linked will fill your needs.

(It is the same motherboard as the previous poster's post, I just have the Canadian site :p )

Is all the necessary cables plugged in? (24/20 pin motherboard power, 4/8pin for CPU, 6pin graphics card(if applicable). Also this may be a silly question, but did you transfer your RAM, CPU, Hard drive to your new motheboard?

Everything is plugged in, there aren't any loose cords and I am pretty sure I got all the right ones in...and I transferred my ram

You gotta transfer the processor too if you haven't transferred it, here's a little tutoriel : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdyWDOf19J8
Note that installing the CPU heatsink installation may differ from heatsink to heatsink.

I linked a CPU installation guide, but from the look of it I'm sure you can figure out to take out the CPU, just make sure the pins on the bottom of the processor doesn't get damaged (don't pick it up from there). You will also need new thermal paste, clean off the old paste with rubbing alcohol on the CPU and under the heatsink. If you don't have thermal paste, you're going to need some or else your CPU could possibly overheat and cause system shutdowns.

Could you elaborate a bit more on what happens? Such as beeping sounds etc.
Help us understand to help you :)

Hmm usually when nothing powers up at all it means that the power isn't going through. There must be something not plugged properly or maybe by chance you flipped the power supply switch to off on the back. If you could post a picture it may help.

How do you flip it off? The people I took it to to diagnose completely manhandled the poor thing. Half the wires were unplugged. I can't post a picture, I have no camera on my phone or kindle. So thay sucks.

There might be a switch in back of it, I and O
When they diagnosed it, did they say there were any problems with it? If not, something musn't be plugged it properly.

In the top right corner, that's the CPU 4 pin connector.
In the bottom right corner, that's the motherboard 24 pin.
In the bottom, that's IDE (for older hard drives and DVD drivers)
In the bottom left corner, that's the SATA ports for more newer hard drivers.
The 4pin and 24pin are necessary for the PC to power on.
You might have this behind your power supply (in back of PC) :

One last thing to check is if you've plugged your front panel connectors, refer to the motherboard manuel on how to plug them. If they aren't plugged, your front power button won't turn on the computer since it's not connected to anything. Try search front panel in your motherboard manuel and look for the corresponding cables inside your case.
