Hi guys. This is my most pressing issue so I'll get straight to the point with as much details as possible in order to see if this can be fixed. So, my friend gave me a usb stick to put some music for him. Whenever I get external devices, the first thing I ALWAYS do before copying files to and fro from the device is to scan it with my antivirus software. I use Norton Internet Security. So I plugged in the flash drive and started a scan with my anitvirus. I noticed that the scan was taking forever (and that it had detected and resolved some threats) so I decided to leave my laptop on and let it continue the scan overnight. I woke up the next morning to find my laptop asleep, so I knew that the scan had been completed. I awoke my laptop from sleep and the antivirus software told me that I had to restart my laptop for changes to take place. So I restarted my laptop (with the flash drive still plugged in). And then the problem began. (I use windows 7) My laptop stayed a while on the "Starting Windows" screen, longer than usual, and just when I though things were running smoothly, boom, I get stuck on this black screen that has my cursor in the middle, "Windows 7 home premium" displayed on the bottom of the screen, with the option of restarting or shutting down my laptop in the bottom right corner of the screen. I restarted my laptop twice and it still stopped at that particular black screen. I knew something was definitely up and I suspect a virus.
I took my laptop to a repair shop and showed the technician the black screen and also told him the process that led up to the black screen (just like how I've told you guys) and he said that its probably virus. So what we decided to do was to try and recover my data (my pictures, my movies, my songs, my downloads) from the hdd by removing it from the laptop, and using it as an external on another laptop in order to view and retrieve the files. To my greatest disappointment, all the folders were empty! Downloads, empty, Pictures, empty, Desktop folder(which I have almost most of my stuff on) empty! The hdd also says 277gb of 277gb free. But we didn't format anything! We also tried the "show hidden files and folders" option, it didn't make a difference.
It is a virus right? So I have 2 problems now. My laptop can't be used and I don't know how to recover my files! Guys please what do I do to get my files back? I can't imagine my life without those documents. I am up for ANYTHING! Thanks for you help!

You actually might get lucky there is a virus that simply hides all files in your folders if you type "folder se" in the search bar in your start menu the second option will be to show hidden files that may fix it if not you will have to do what they said you should of course also install and run an antivirus, my suggestion to most people is to get a antivirus with an automatic scheduler (even a free antivirus like avast has this option) then set it to run automatically as many people forget to run it.

Hope this helps
