After the windows 8.1 "update," the wife's pavilion p7-1446s started acting funny, not waking from sleep mode, office lock-ups. Event logs indicated no software/hardware driver problems, SMART and mem tests all ok.

Went to HP, selected detect my device, installed THEIR detection software, and poof a list of up dates for this specific computer. All of drivers they list are out of date, but there is a BIOS update released in early July. So I download and install, which several forums recommended after the 8.1 update.

No errors, crashes hangups during the BIOS update. System prompts restart and if I am lucky it will show the HP logo.

HP support say this "this update wasn't for your machine, it's out of warranty and will be $199.99 + shipping both ways to fix." So what is the correct BIOS? I can set the recovery jumper and restore the BIOS if I know which one is the right one.

I don't think the recovery jumper will do anything... if you can find the right BIOS update better update it again. If the computer can reboot without issues you can take your time but if it has booting issues, better do it as soon as possible as things may turn for the worse and video may be lost. If this should happen, you can always replace the BIOS chip... it's removable and easy to replace.

Search through the HP website as they may have the correct BIOS update, get in contact with them if you can't find it... and only after confirming they don't have it, try finding it for the motherboard model: MSI MS-7778 (Jasmine)

If necessary you can find the BIOS chip...
