Which motherboard + CPU to upgrade to?

Shadow of Mordor just came out, and unfortunately at this point not upgrading my CPU is not an option if I want to play at ultra settings... so it's time to get the wallet out.

My CPU, the FX-6300, is only 75% as powerful as the recommended CPU... what do you guys think I should upgrade to? My budget is around $350. Is that enough? I have been thinking about the i7-4790K. Would that be a good choice? Also, I am unsure on whether or not getting this CPU also means that I will need to get a better MoBo; it isn't the greatest(760GM-p34(fx)). If it's true that my MoBo will not support a better CPU, then what MoBo should I upgrade to? I don't really want to spend anymore than I have to on that bit, seeing as I don't care to much for OCing. Here are my specs:

GPU : R9 280X
CPU : FX-6300
RAM : 8 GB
MOTHERBOARD : 760GM-P34(FX)
HDD : 1 TB
SDD : NONE
SOUND CARD : XONAR U3
PSU : 600W

No, I'm saying you should buy nothing at least for a couple months, see where things are going with patches. I don't have time atm to really read up on it, but if you are...
The game just came out, its a very common theme (much to my annoyance) that gaming companies are releasing games without proper stability in their gameplay. Hell, us BF4 players waited 11 friggin months for the core mechanics of that game to be fixed, and me personally who had gotten used to their busted and infamous "netcode" is now further annoyed that 11 months later I have to learn how to shoot in game all over again.

My point? I'm not familiar with this game other than its part of the LOTR franchise, but I'd wait a bit for patches to come out before you decide you need to shell out hundreds of dollars when an FX-6300 contrary to I'm sure many people who will want to argue the point for various motives is and should be perfectly capable of supporting any well coded game on the market right now.

And no, I probably wouldn't overclock on that board since there was something useful there. That board does on paper at least support overclocking, but its more or less a bottom of the barrel bargain board, probably woefully inadequate construction quality, mosfets, capacitors and power phases to get a good stable overclock without blowing the board.

The game is being heavily praised for high optimization for PC, I know I can run it, but I want to be able to get ultra(at good fps). Are you saying I should by a new MoBo so I can overclock the 6300?

No, I'm saying you should buy nothing at least for a couple months, see where things are going with patches. I don't have time atm to really read up on it, but if you are unable to play in ultra with a smooth FPS rate, I would still argue that the game is not all that well optimized contrary to any praise some yahoo on their list of sponsored sites might be saying.

While I'd of never bought a motherboard that low end to begin with for a "gaming PC", you have it already, I can't see a good reason to junk that board for another one just for overclocking. If you were going to go through all that then yea I would look into a CPU too. As far as shelling out money for an i7 though, assuming you're going to ignore my mention of pending patches. No game on the market draws any significant advantage from Hyperthreading, and no game likely will anytime soon (HyperThreading being the ONLY difference between the i5s and i7s of the same generation). So unless you're getting into heavily threaded stuff like CAD design, more than occasional hardcore video editing (I'm not talking about you recorded your gameplay for a bit and want to make a 5 minute Youtube montage, I mean professionally), then I would look at i5s.

But I can downclock my FX-8350 which is almost identical to the FX-6300 just the 63 has 1 less module (meaning 2 less cores) to match the 6300 and I can play BF4 just as well as any Intel rig, and I can't imagine this shadow of mordor thing being any more demanding than BF4, but I could be wrong. I'll research it further when I have more time.
