Your uses will determine that. The VII Hero for almost everyone is all you need.

Unless you going 3/4 way SLI/Xfire get the Extreme.

The VI is Z87, the VII is Z97.
I would buy the more modern motherboard. It is cheaper and will perform equally we..

I'd get the Asus Extreme if in good condition.

If looking ahead at all then the Z97 Hero, looked at both the Extreme and Z87 Hero when they came out, went with the Hero and have never regretted it, so I picked up the Z97 Hero and it's even better (have both of my Hero's in sig. Unless the Extreme has something you Need, go the Hero, it also provides an upgrade path to the Broadwell CPUs come out

To be quite honest, I don't think Broadwell CPU's are going to be a big 'hit'. Just Haswell refresh for the current 9 series boards. I was hoping that they were going to be supported with DDR4 motherboards, but it appears not.

We are currently running Haswell 'refresh' with the 4690K 4690K etc, the original Haswell was xx7x, Broadwell will be the step upward and will run on the Z97 and there will prob be another new chipset for the 1150 socket
