Hi
I recently purchased a i7 4790K (Devils Canyon) LGA1150 and Asus Z87-K Motherboard. Since the very first day, I haven't even seen the bios screen. Fans run but thats all I get. I sent the motherboard back as faulty to the supplier (who said i had bent 2 pins bottom left and right kind not the very edge ones but slightly inside. So i had it returned to myself and have had the pins straightened. Still i have nothing, After lots of research I have discovered this combo is not compatible according to intels website. Could this explain why i cant even see the bios screen? The supplier has given me the option to return to them again and they will send back to Asus for inspection, but again I will be charged postage both ways and inspection fee....I'm concerned there may be nothing wrong with it other than incompatibility. I've also read this cpu will work in all Z87 boards with updated bios installed. Can anyone help me?

Solution
No, you will not get into the bios, since 4790k is not being recognized by the motherboard. You need a bios version that supports DC. And 4770k can be overclocked beyond 4GHz, you do realize that right. I had a 4770k overclocked to 4.5GHz.

I have no idea what bios is on the Mobo, Its a new build so i have never had the thing up and running to see the bios.

When i was looking for mobos, the Z87 was recommended with an older i7 processor.
BEST FSX BUILD WITH HARDWARE ON THE MARKET TODAY (July 2013):

As of the date this was posted, any user who is genuinely interested in being in the best hardware situation possible with FSX should obtain the following parts:

1. i7 4770k Intel Haswell processor. At 4.3GHz this processor is running the same or better than Sandy Bridge @ 4700MHz and at 4800 the Haswell is running better than Sandy Bridge @ 5300MHz.

2. A z87 Haswell motherboard that has the features you require and is not a cheap board (I do not suggest boars of under $180 USD for clocks higher than 4.3GHz) I suggest Asus for this as their boards are very easy to deal with and are second to none with AUTO features many boards require manual input to accomplish clocking goals.

If you had a better ASUS board you could use flashback feature to update to the latest bios version that supports Devil's Canyon. Since Asus-k doesn't have that feature, I'd return the board and get a Z97 board that will run 4790k out of the box. Plus why get a budget board especially with 4790k that can clock fairly high.

The supplier wont accept return as was apparently customer damaged (bent pins) which i think was caused by the plastic cover, trying to replace on to return the board. Also they refusing to help with technical support.

I mentioned compatibility and got this response "this could well be one of the reasons, unfortunately I cannot give out advice regarding technical details or compatibility issues, as the responsibility for that is down to the customer. Sorry I cannot be of more help,"

I'm unemployed and not planning on overclocking as i think 4Ghz should be quite adequate

I dont really want to go slower than 4ghz which is why i chose this processor...
I was hoping to find out if the processor will work on this board with updated bios (which i might be able to find a pc repair shop that will do this for a price).
But my main concern is does the board actually work? should i see the bios screen even with the incompatibility issue...

Thank you for your help :)
I do realize that about over clocking, but that then means water coolers etc (more expense on an already severely over budget computer)
Maybe i should buy the cheapest possible processor i can find to fit in the mobo then update bios for 4790K?

Ok, so I have just solved this....
1st of all the board does have the flashback feature, but don't waste your time, Asus customer service reckon you can update the BIOS by downloading the updater and BIOS file from their website and placing it on a usb memory stick, although it seemed as though this had worked I still had no video output or POST, this prompted returning the 4790k in case this was faulty. Having bought a replacement, I found the CPU not at fault, this was what I had to do to get it to work.
1. Buy a Celeron G1820 2.7GHz, (about £27) use this to get it going and install Windows
2. Install the drivers from the Motherboard DVD, especially the Intel Management Program as the 4th Gen BIOS updater demands this is installed 1st.
3. Download the 4th Gen BIOS updater, BIOS Renamer and a suitable BIOS file ( I went for 1302 because of my previous failure with 1401, but now believe this was the method) you will need WINZIP or WINRAR to unpack the .zip files. http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=1&s=45&m=Z87-K&os=&hashedid=1QXNrXg6jfKetfSK
4. Place all the unzipped files in 1 directory and run the Renamer, F5 to refresh the window as mine didn't refresh on it's own, the .cap BIOS file should now be renamed to Z87K.CAP.
5. Run the 4th Gen BIOS updater, after this has completed I think it asks for a reboot.
That's it! After the reboot I shut down and swapped out the Celeron for the i7 and it worked! Anyone want a Celeron for £25 plus P&P?
