I'm hopefully putting together my new rig tonight. I'll be using my hard drive from the old one until I can get an ssd. Would it be better to format the hd now in the old rig or toss it in the new one and it will prompt me to format when reinstalling Windows?

Reformat when you put it in the new system, if you intend to use it for your OS drive. If just using it as a storage drive, you can format it now.
