The maximum amount of RAM you can put into your laptop is 4GB of DDR2 SDRAM.
Here's for reference: http://www.cnet.com/products/hp-pavilion-dv6707us-15-4-...
Just look in the memory section and also, in order to install 4GB, you would need to remove your 2x1GB and buy 2x2GB since it only has 2 RAM slots.

Windows 7 is an operating system and doesn't limit the RAM support (except for Windows 7 Home Premium which is 16GB max or 32-bit Windows(3.5GB usable)) The motherboard of the laptop only supports 4GB and we are limited by hardware here, not software :)

Correct, the limit is the result of the hardware, not the operating system. This is an older system. Even if you could install more memory, you would see no improvement in performance.

Actually, there are limitations on RAM for Operating systems, here's a good reference for it : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop...(v=vs.85).aspx#physical_memory_limits_windows_7

True, but that is not the issue in this instance. The HP's chipset/motherboard is the limiting factor.
