Best Position for Laptop

I have a laptop which I connect to a 27" 1080p monitor through HDMI when gaming. When I close the LID of the LAPTOP, the keys and the screen get VERY HOT. Is there any other way of placing my laptop, so it VENTILATES better and remains cool, without any accessories?

Not in my experience. The laptop is deigned to lose some heat through the upper surface (not a lot, just some), and it is not intended to be run at nearly full power with the lid shut.

My solution was to put it elsewhere on a cooling pad with the top open and use a wireless keyboard and mouse, effectively using the laptop as a conventional desktop. This was comparatively cheap.
