So, I'm trying to wipe a 500GB 2.5" Hitachi hard drive I have laying around...but everytime I connect it to a power and data connector to my USB ports(2.0 ANd 3.0) The drive will connect...then a few seconds later disconnect. Then reconnect. Disconnect. The time between is never long enough for the computer to detect the hard drive so I can format it.

Do I have a bum drive? Other hard drive work with the connector and the ports are good.
I disabled the USB Power saving mode.

Hi there bammeh,

So you are connecting the drive with two cables, one for power and one for data right? I would advise you to try the HDD with different cables(power and data one). If you are using a desktop PC, you can try connecting the drive to the ports on the back of the casing, they tend to provide more power. If this thing does not solve the issue, most probably the HDD has some physical damage. It may be the HDD enclosure not the HDD itself. Though, you can not be really sure.
You may also consider what ronintexas mentioned about connecting it to the mobo.

Hope this will help,
