My Windows 7 laptop has only 15 GB available on the C drive out of 283 GB. Much of the used-up space is from 1000s of temp files that don't disappear when I clear the cache. I downloaded a file analyzer but it doesn't help me know which files are OK to delete. I don't want to delete important operating temp files, if there are any there.

use ccleaner and disable system restore. Thats where some it may have gone. Temp files take up space

Do not disable system restore.
It is there to help you recover if you have a software caused failure.

Run windows disk cleanup.
You find it in accessories/system tools.

I didnt say you couldnt turn it back on

It can also harbor malware if youre infected. IMO SR is hopeless. On these its off

If you get infected with malware, system restore can save you and get you back to the point before the infection.
You can limit how much disk space system restore can use.
SR space should not be any issue.
