So basically, I'm trying to get my 4790k to 5ghz just to say I can and it seems I'm going to have to push the voltage close to 1.5v with hyperthreading disabled (hopefully not much more). It's also a rather cool night so I figured I'd be able to keep the temps manageable, If I can stress it at 5ghz for 10 minutes, I'd be happy enough hitting that mark and by no means, am I trying to get a stable 24/7 overclock at 5ghz.

But my concern is would that much voltage hurt my chip? I currently have tried 4.9ghz (hyperthreading also disabled) at 1.4vcore with temps maxing at 85 so I reckon I could squeak by at 5ghz briefly.

I don't see why you would overclock the CPU to that extent :p
The 4790K is plenty powerful and I think it would be a better idea to get a less aggressive overclock (4.4-4.5Ghz) and have Hyperthreading enabled. I'm not too familiar with overclocking on Intel's side though.

Like I said, I mostly want to do it just to say I did it and I'm only intending on doing it long enough to verify that it won't crash under load and then I'll be reverting back to my "daily-driver" of 4.7ghz.

Please don't. Unless you're running a phase change cooler or LN2, I guarantee your cooling setup won't be able to handle it, much less the copper/silicon inside your chip.

realistically though, assuming I can keep the temperatures under control, how destructive could it be with that specific CPU. After all, the AMD 9590 comes at 1.5v stock.

I had my 4790k at 1.48v today for at 4.8ghz over clock. I did find out how long I could keep there. I would say 20 min stable. temps were below 75c
