A couple of days ago i switch to Windows 8.1. All of a sudden i'm doing something and it just restarts. It happens once or twice during the day. It then wont see my hard drive and i have to hold the power button to turn it off and then it boots right into windows. This has never happened with Windows 7 at all. Did something happen when i went to install it? Should i reinstall windows 8.1 or go back to windows 7? I've tried to run the repair tool from the windows 8.1 disc and said it couldn't be repaired.

Take a look at your Windows Logs (search > view event logs) and look for errors. More than likely, you have problems with a driver (maybe multiple drivers).

There are drivers for different operating systems (Windows 7, 8, 8.1 - plus 32-bit vs. 64-bit). Make sure that you have the current drivers and correct OS. With the hard drive not being recognized, there is a possibility that you have issues with the hard drive - have you run diagnostics on the drive?

If you go to your hard drive manufacturer's website, they have diagnostic utilities for your hard disk there - make sure your drive is fully operational. It could be a corrupted file or files on the hard drive. Are there any errors in your Windows logs?

I'm running a hard drive diagnostic from western digital right now. I also checked the event logs and just shows critical errors from the PC restarting randomly. It doesn't show any driver failures at all.

If the hard drive passes diagnostics - I would take a look at the PSU. Most power and/or reset problems can be traced to a faulty PSU.
