Hi guys, hoping for a miracle here.

I just got my new gtx 980 today, was hoping to enjoy a night of gaming.

System has been together and stable for years, never had an issue like this before.

I first went in to uninstall the old video drivers before installing the new card. New card and old card (560ti) are both nVidia, but I figured that I'd do this anyway. Uninstalled them through Add/Remove programs, worked fine, screen resolution went all wonky, and it said to reset to finish uninstalling. When I did, it hung for a long time (about a minute, way longer than usual with my SSD) on the motherboard splash screen. I thought this was strange, but then it went to the windows login screen and it was fine. At the desktop, there was a notice about installing new VGA drivers from the system tray. I clicked on it, and it was showing the driver installation like it usually does, but it just kept trying to install, never finishing.

I got tired of waiting. I powered down, removed my old gpu, installed the new one (which is awesome btw), and hooked it all back up. I also installed a new 120mm fan while I was in there. When I booted it up, it hung on the splash screen again, but then went to windows just fine. I installed the new gpu drivers, rebooted, it hung on the screen again, but still got into windows.

I played shadows of mordor for an hour or two, everything was great. The new fan was a little loud, so i pulled everything back apart and installed the little fan controller that came with the fan (rosewill 120mm led fan for what it's worth) so that I could turn it down from full speed. This went in fine, hooks up to the fan, the mobo fan header, and a molex pin from the psu.

I plugged all the cables back into the back again, turned it back on, and then my problems really began. I would get to the mobo splash screen (white Gigabyte screen, says to hit DEL, F12, F9, or END), and it never went any further. After a couple of minutes, the screen goes black. Power light stays on on my monitor, all the case fans and cpu fans are running. I can reset it, and the same thing happens every time.

My keyboard is unresponsive at the splash screen. I tried a different keyboard than my K70, which can have issues with BIOS. I used my old simple usb keyboard, plugged into USB3 and USB2 ports, it doesn't work either. The keyboard is lit up, it's obviously powered on, but no response from the mobo.

I tried to boot using the backup BIOS by flipping the switch while it was off. Same problem. I watched the LED error code readout on the motherboard as it booted. It goes through a series of codes quickly, then hangs on b2, which my manual says is "Legacy Option ROM initialization." After the screen goes black, the code is A9, which is listed as "BIOS setup is started." One time, while booting from the backup BIOS, the code came up as AE and I had a blinking cursor line on the screen, but it never went anywhere after almost 15 minutes. I rebooted again, and every time since I get code A9 at the black screen after the splash regardless of what BIOS it is set on.

I tried to do a CMOS reset, never done one before, not even too sure about what it is. I unplugged the power cable from the psu after turning the switch off, and held down the CMOS reset switch for 30 seconds. Hooked everything back up, and nothing changed. Hangs on splash screen, goes black but the monitor stays on, totally unresponsive to any keyboard. I tried another CMOS reset by removing the battery for 30 seconds (which I had to pull my gpu out to reach), and still nothing changed.

I'm stuck as to what to do here guys. :(

I can't seem to do anything to even access the BIOS or mobo at all. I can't flash the BIOS because I can't even hit END at splash for the QFlash thing. I can't imagine it is the new gpu because it was working just fine for that hour, and also the issues with hanging at the splash screen seemed to start before I installed it, after I uninstalled the nvidia drivers. After I installed the fan controller is when it went from hanging at the splash and then going to windows to hanging at the splash and going to the black screen. The keyboard was unresponsive on the splash screen under both situations, although I was only using my K70 before the black screen came.

Is there any way to try and fix this? I'm at a loss and I don't really know much about BIOS and motherboard troubleshooting in general. I set up the BIOS when I put the rig together, and never touched it again.

Here are the parts I'm working with:

Gigabyte GZ77X-UD5H motherboard
Coolermaster UCP-700W psu
MSI 560ti / MSI GTX980 Gaming
G.Skill DDR3-1600 RAM
i5-3570k
1 HDD for storage, 1 SSD with windows

I'm giving up hope to save my computer and my files. If I have to reinstall windows or something I gladly would to get my PC back, but I can't even access the BIOS in order to do that. I don't know of any way to reinstall or fix the BIOS on the motherboard if I can't even input any commands to it.

Please help Tom's Hardware, you're my only hope. :(

It could be a problem with the BIOS needing updating...were the posts your mobo and the 900-series cards? I personally don't like updating the BIOS unless I have to...

I would try installing the card (leave your monitor on the mobo), go into BIOS and switch to the PCI card being your primary display, save the settings and exit BIOS. Switch your monitor to the GPU and see if Windows is booting fine. If it doesn't - then I would uninstall the GPU again and look into the BIOS update.
Try removing the GPU and using the onboard graphics. Make sure Windows boots properly and give it a bit of testing (rebooting, running a few programs, etc) to see if the speeds are where they should be.

Next, install the GPU, go into the BIOS and make sure you setup the primary video as PCI, then boot Windows and reinstall the current drivers. When you reset the BIOS, it may have defaulted back to the onboard graphics as your primary display.

Thanks for your quick reply.

Okay, so I pulled out the 980, hooked up the onboard graphics using DVI, and I got the "BIOS settings have been reset" screen, where I selected "Pick optimal settings and reboot." After rebooting, I sailed right past the splash screen and into windows with no hangups and no freezing. Programs all work fine, computer is as speedy as ever.

What is my best bet for fixing this problem with my gpu installed? I see some other posts about 900-series cards causing no-boot problems, and they were fixed by updating BIOS. I've never updated my BIOS, should I try that? There's a guide in my motherboard manual for using QFlash, I can walk myself through it pretty easily it seems.

Should I uninstall the 340.16 nvidia drivers and reinstall them after I put the card back in? Should I check my BIOS settings before I put the new card back in just in case it starts freezing again?

Thanks again for your quick help.

So I went ahead and installed new BIOS before I waited for you to respond. Now my ssd isn't showing up in my BIOS at all. Trying to boot tells me that BOOTMGR is missing, press CTRL+ALT+DEL to reset. I can get into the BIOS and it shows my storage HDD, but my SSD with windows isn't showing up. Is there some setting I need to change? Should I reset the CMOS again and see if it puts the right settings back in when I reoptimize?

Oy, one problem to another here.

Check your settings for the SSD - they should be set to AHCI (if it is set to IDE/RAID - it won't work properly). You also need to set your boot priority - when you flash the BIOS - you literally clear everything and load a new "operating system" for the BIOS.

Okay, so I got that problem with the SSD fixed. Under the normal boot order options was another menu that said something like "Hard Disk BBS settings." In there it listed my HDD as #1 and my SSD as #2, so I switched it around and I can boot just fine again.

I'll try to plug the gpu back in and see what happens. I haven't uninstalled the drivers yet. I'll post back with my results.

Everything seems to be golden now. =D

I rebooted several times without plugging in the gpu, hangups were gone, everything was working correctly.

I left the 340.16 drivers installed, turned it off, plugged in the card, plugged the DVI into the card itself, and it all booted just fine. I don't know if the new BIOS fixed it or just managing to get the CMOS reset to go through, but I'm not going to complain.

No more hangups, no more issues. Such relief. :)

Thanks again for all your help, everybody on here has always been great the couple of times I've reached out for assistance, I really appreciate it.
