Comcast Modem with Modem Router Combo?

Hi,

I currently have a Motorola SB6141 cable modem from Comcast hooked up. Our router broke so my dad ordered a modem router combo (specifically the TP-LINK TD-W8970). I know there is an option to set the modem router combo up as a router only, but I'm lost on exactly how to do it.

Do I just connect the modem to the modem router? What connection type should I be using (dynamic, static, PPPoE)? Or what should I even do?

I have been trying for the longest time and I am getting pretty frustrated.

Thanks in advance.

Your dad purchased the wrong device. You don't need a modem/router combo, you need just a standard wireless router.

Is your SB6141 a modem only with just one Ethernet port on the back? If so, you can't use the TP-Link with your cable modem since the TP-Link does not have a WAN Ethernet port.
